Thunder 1A Bass neck measurements Empty Thunder 1A Bass neck measurements

Hey Everyone.
I got a Thunder 1A Bass new back in 1982. Had it until about 5 years ago ( painful story you dont need to hear about…). I’m about to embark on building a bass and of all the basses I’ve tried over the years, I still think I like the neck on my Thunder 1A the best. With that in mind, could I ask a 1A owner out there if you could give me some dimensions ? I’m looking for neck width at nut and 12th fret and, importantly, neck depth at 1st and 12th fret.

Many thanks
CB

Hello CB and welcome.
You've taken on a big project by the sound of it!

I'm sure one our bass player members will be by to help you out.
I'm one of those guitar guys who don't know nuthin' 'bout no basses! scratch

But hey, I do have 2 Thunder guitars!  Smile

Good luck, and I hope you post pictures of your progress.

Thanks for the welcome Barry !
Might be a while before I post any pictures, still very much at the planning stage… It will be my first attempt at guitar building and I’m still trying to get set up with tools etc.

My recollection of the Thunder 1A bass is that it was pretty much P bass width at the nut but less deep front to back than a standard P bass C-shape neck. I’m currently playing a stingray special which is the best neck I’ve played since ( but I feel it’s still a little deeper than the 1A). It will be interesting to get the measurements… if anything, just to see if my recollections of the neck shape are correct or if I’ve heavily romanticised it and I’m just longing for the one that got away!

I’m probably going to be putting a fretless neck on this one ( if anyone has a new old stock fretless Thunder neck they want to part with, I could short cut the whole process Very Happy).

Pretty sure the guitar player in my band back in the eighties ( in Glasgow…) used a black version of the guitar in your avatar !

My current avatar is a Spectrum GT model, but that H-S-H configuration is seen on a few other spectrum models as well.
Your guitar player obviously had good taste! Hairy & Wooly

I have a Spectrum GTBass that you are most welcome to play and take measurements from should you like it…

… I’m in Camden.
