'lo again folks.
I finally got around to spending some time with my recently purchased white Spectrum S
 http://forum.westoneguitars.net/members-westones-f6/spectrum-st-s-and-thunder-i-a-t491.htm

She plays great but I still need to do a bit of minor cleaning and tweaking. The pup selector was scratchy so I hit it with a few drops of light penetrating oil which seems to have cleared that up. However I noticed that the bottom surface of the volume knob tends to ride up against the body when turned fully clockwise. You can feel it scuffing along.

It's almost like its telescoping inwards if that makes sense, but I'm not sure why that would even be. It's not interfering with anything electrical or the operation but it should be adjusted. To do that I need to remove the knob.

I'm assuming the knobs are "push/friction fit"?? But before I do something daft and break it I thought I'd check with my favourite Westone reprobates and perverts first. Razz

'appreciate any guidance!
Cheers.

Hello Barry, Smile

Regarding your knob...
Laughing there are a number of different methods suggested in one of the posts here. Some have suggested prising it off with two spoons or screwdrivers. they are pretty easy to remove but I would check first to see if there isn't a little screw holding it in. Put something on the body to protect the paintwork - I use a plastic lid from a takeaway carton, and using your preferred tools, gently prise the knob in a straight up movement to lift it, it should then pull off quite easily by hand once it has been loosened! I hope this helps and good luck with it!

I represent that remark.

Yep, what Poll said; make sure that there is no grubb screw that screws onto the pot shaft - shouldn't be on OEM knobs - and straight up off.

Um... you gonna share or what?! Laughing

Hi Barry

I'm with Polly on this,

I use wooden clothes pegs for this job, the type with two bits of wood and a spring in between. Just twist them apart and dump the spring (unless you need to hang your smalls out afterwards Laughing ). Put the tapered ends of the wood under either side of the control knob, and gently pivot them up at the same time. Make sure to slacken off the grub screw if there is one, or you might pull the spindle out!!( I should know, I've done it before and it wasn't even my guitar clown )

If it is fitted with grub screws, they can leave a witness mark on the pot spindle. When you refit the knob and tighten up the grub screw, the knob can end up pretty much where it started. Make some spacers out of card (or couple of thin plectrums work), and put them either side of the spindle. Drop the knob back on and rest it on the spacers. If possible try to rotate the knob so the grub screw is away from it's original position on the pot. Tighten the grub, pull out the spacers and ta-da, you should have a uniform gap around the edge. Hope this helps.

DAN.

Thanks Polly, John and Dan. That's kinda the approach I had in mind. Wink
There's no grub screw that I can see on any of the knobs on either of my '85 Spectrums.

What has me flummoxed is that vertical telescoping movement of the thing. Can't figure why. scratch
I have a hunch it may have suffered a blow on the top at some point but I'll know for sure once I get around to pulling it off. There's no visible external damage.

Stay tuned. "Film at eleven."

Yep, agree with everyone else. If the knobs aren't held on by little grub screws, then they're push-fit (just had a look at my Spectrum SX... defo push-fit.

Go easy levering them off to avoid damaging them. My guess is that you'll find the post under the knob has been bent; it should sit at right angles to the guitar body. If it doesn't, the knob will be in contact with the body as you turn it (Freud would have a fit reading this post cyclops ).

Good luck with the fix. If you do happen to damage the knob someone on here (Stateside I think) is selling a couple of spares. Or David (the "other site") may be able to help you out.

and now..... what's happened to Polly? :queen: All this time we've been kept in order by our eccentric leader in pink wellies :joker:, now it's a change of image, all posh and sophisticated like 🐱 🐱 What's going on?

Just a quickie update to let you know that I haven't forgotten about my knob problem.

I've been too busy with yard work and plumbing this weekend to get down to actually removing the thing (wives can be annoyingly demanding critters). But I did find time to play the Spectrum S last night and I did take a bit more time to examine it more closely. Shocked

As I and norfolkngood had suspected, the shaft is indeed bent slightly, indicating that it was lightly hit at some point. I don't know why I didn't see it before. Embarassed
There is also a small indentation or "bruising" of the body edge (out of focus in the picture foreground) which isn't immediately noticeable, confirming that the guitar was bumped. When I bought the thing I was so thrilled to get it at such a good price I figured I'd worry about problems later! Welcome to "later".

The shaft is not dramatically out of perpendicular but just enough to cause the knob to "scuff" on the body as it is turned fully clockwise. Otherwise it operates freely.

So that's the cause.
The problem remains though as to how to remove the knob without busting it or causing body damage.
How do I remove my, um, knob? On the Spectrum that is. WestoneSpectrum-S-Knobcloseup
As you see, there is not sufficient space under it to insert a lever of any kind as suggested in previous posts. scratch The gap is paper thin so it may be necessary to try and, um, pull it off by hand, or try and figure out a safe way to lever it from a fulcrum above the body somehow.

Any other suggestions before I just, um, yank my knob?
I know, I know...paging Dr. Freud. Sometimes a knob is just a knob.

I've pulled the knobs on my Spectrum GT off by accident before... didn't hurt anything. Just puhed 'em right back on. They aren't loose, either.

Might be the lesser of two evils Barry; by the look of things, there's no way you're going to be able to get anything under the knob to lever it off without (probably) damaging the body.

"It's one small tug for mankind" is the alternative...

I would, if it were mine, check on availability of both the pot knob and the spindle, just in case.

Good luck

All-l-l-l-l righty then...It's tug and pray time!
That's been my gut approach, but I just needed some encouragement. clown

We're due for a couple of days of rain coming up. Sounds like a perfect indoor activity, eh?
Now, I just need to get the 'ole arthritis under control and away we go!
Could be close to exciting...and likely anti-climatic in the end.

It'll come off good as gold, but it will be tight so exert enough pressure to lift it buy no more! You're not gonna hurt anything; the pots and shafts are very robust and I'll wager that you'll be able to bend it back to straight! Very Happy

You were right on John!

I did my best with my arthritic fingers to yank it off, but it was not possible to move it--couldn't get leverage. No It was really stuck on.

So, I resorted to mechanical help--I used a slip wrench to get a grip on the little bugger, made the sign of the cross, and gave a mighty heave ho.
And voila, success! cheers

If you look carefully you can see that "bruising" on the edge of the body that I mentioned earlier, indicating that the guitar had been bumped or dropped, and likely the cause of it all.

How do I remove my, um, knob? On the Spectrum that is. WestoneSknobspindle1
Well, the good news is that the shaft is fine! It's perfectly straight and has not suffered any damage at all!
It was only the knob which was cock-eyed and causing all the problems. Smile

The bad news is that the knob hit the body so hard that there is an impact ring, made worse over the years by the sharp edge of the knob scuffing it because it was not seated correctly. Sad

It must have been going on a long time. The engineered tolerance of the push fit was superb--really tight, so I guess others just figured it couldn't be moved, or was broken.

But, I'm not gonna lose sleep over the blemish. The indentation is covered by the knob.

Gosh, thanks for the compliment.

I have an 8-year old Hewlett Packard model 812 digital camera. It was a big deal when I bought it with 4 mega-pixels and all kinds of zoom options but there are much better ones available now. It does have a nice Pentax lens though. Battery life is the main pain in the arse; this one's a pig and chews them up quickly.

I typically use a high resolution setting, then rework the image in my graphics program to brighten, sharpen or crop, etc.
