Man, I dig Def Leppard, Poison and Lita Ford! Too bad Ratt ain't there with'em...
Brainfertilizer wrote:Interesting...you just missed my mention of Queen by scant minutes. May have been typing at the same time I was.
"Jazz" was generally reviled as a Queen album, from what I've seen. I think because the only "hits" from it were Fat Bottomed Girls and Bicycle Race, which were the weakest two songs on the album.
But I like Dead on Time because even the rhythm guitar part is fast/shredder like, lots of great guitar fills throughout. And in the album credits, they credit the Thunderclap sound to God. Which is kind of cool.
Oops, sorry Brain, I indeed hadn't seen that. Crediting God is definitely cool! Jazz is not my favorite but I find Queen were basically steady from start to finish, it's all good.

Re: Best Rock Track of all time
Coming back to topic:-
So as I started this thread I am final judge and arbiter unless over-ruled by admin, the current arbitrary rankings are:-
1. All Along the Watchtower
2. Black Dog
3. Smoke on the Water
You have a limited timeframe to argue for a Queen or other track, I cant see Hollies being in contention.
PS Chemical Bros and Pet Shop Boys are non starters.

Re: Best Rock Track of all time
I know I've donned my Captain Obvious hat and cape here, but I was surprised these haven't been mentioned already! In no particular order -
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses
Ace Of Spades - Motorhead
Free bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
(I also thinking of Dire Straits Sultans Of Swing and The Eagles Hotel California but I fear these aren't "Rock" enough, although great guitar tracks never the less!)

If my pick doesn't win fairly, of course I'll change the result!! What... You think this is a democracy or summat?!
Hmmm... Sweet child's gotta be up there, but Ace of spades is perhaps a bit metal for this think tank? I dunno... There have been no boundaries set....

Gag me with a spoon! Half the kids taking guitar lessons at the shop, and at the music studio cross town, want to play that thing. My kid is also teaching guitar now and I get to hear him practicing it at home too! AND they play it on the damn radio all the time too!!DuoFuzz wrote:...Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses...
+1 Love Knoffler's playing and Eagles' harmonies.(I also thinking of Dire Straits Sultans Of Swing and The Eagles Hotel California but I fear these aren't "Rock" enough, although great guitar tracks never the less!)

is it too late to call for Zappa's peaches en regalia?....maybe it doesnt fit in the Rock song category, but nevertheless a great song
also love The Eagles' Journey of the Sorcerer.

.... yeah, me too; it was one of the songs that me pick up the banjo! The Eagles were but a shadow of themselves without Bernie Leadon!! However, I'm afraid that it wouldn't even figure on a scale of the worlds best rock songs!
There's nothing wrong with SCOM, Barry; the reason it gets so much airplay is because it is a great song... real pissed off rock and roll, which is why all the kids wanna play it too! It has become something of a cliché these days, I agree, but it's still a goodie....

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh... Frank. FZ is my all time favorite musician/writer bar none. I love Zappa and listen him more than anything, his music just appeals to me so much. There is nothing close to his brilliance and composition in rock music, his music is as valid as any classical composers IMHO. Its sophisticated, funny, beautiful and has some rockin riffs. He has a catalog of over 60 albums, so i highly reccomend checkin some out if you haven't! Long live Zappa!

Re: Best Rock Track of all time
"Shut and play yer guitar" is a great record, but nothing of Franks enormous back catalogue qualifies as a contender for the greatest rock track of all time; not because they're unworthy but because they were always pretty hard for non-musos to understand, and hence didnt reach as many ears as they perhaps deserved to!

I totally agree with you, its a shame more people haven't been exposed to his huge library of music. One size fits all is one of his best albums from the 70's ( check it out if you haven't) but thats for another thread.

Re: Best Rock Track of all time
General popularity isnt a factor in my judging, why else would Black Dog be my candidate? So anything that a muso thinks fits the bill is in. Something from Beefcake must be a contender.

Yeah, i would have to agree. Zappa was pretty blues based "with alot of spice" like Steve Vai said, but sonically he made some of the coolest sounds and in that way he was one of the most innovated. He played some mean ugly notes with attitude too, i love his solos. His 1982 band with Vai was one of my favorites, awesome stuff.

The only time Vai did anything good in a band imho. The track "what's new in Baltimore" I think is the name is pretty sweet I must admit.

Re: Best Rock Track of all time
The greatest rock track changes for me.
It's whatever makes me feel alive and on top of the world at that time.
Right now it's Soldiers Under Command by Stryper for some reason. Just a fun song.
+1 to Cochise, also.
