Absolute and un-questionable brilliance. A class act through and through.

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
For me, the only thing missing from Gary Moore's repetoire was restraint. He is one of those guitarists that I would love to be able to play like, but if I could, I wouldn't, if you see what I mean ?
All in all, however, a great loss, but in terms of his musical career, he had a great innings, which was commensurate with his talent.

Ice - I am happy and willing to do a short epitaph for you. It would be a great privilege if you would be prepared to do likewise for me in the fullness of time.

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
That's just..... beautiful Graham.
As for me I would consider it to be a singular honor. I'm thinking I would make a play on that venerable Irish left-handed compliment and it would go ah-sumpthin like-ah 'dis...
Our beloved Hoax.... the Good Lord did take a liking to him, and not a moment too soon.
Back on topic then. I certainly can see your point on the busy-ness of his playing, but it was more so the tonality and bluesy flavors he injected that always rates him top 5 in my eyes usually.

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
I need to go off topic again with the following:
Here lies the last mortal remains of our good friend Steve (Ice). He was considered a rather unfortunate hybrid of Gary Moore and Ron Jeremy, in that, he played guitar like Ron and received fewer porn movie offers than Gary.
However, he had some nice guitars and liked to go out into the countryside with his gun and kill animals, so for these reasons he will be sadly missed.
Back on topic, I agree with you about that tone, it could cut you in two!!

Ridiculously talented. Sorely missed.
For me, he doesn't hit the sweet tone until he's on the LP. Everything else sounds, not-quite-right.

I actually also love the attack he gets on a Tele. It's ferocious!!
Hoax
Speaking of Teles - check out this guy. The video is pretty old when he was a teenager. His name is Jesse Davey.

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
That guy has a sugary sweet vibe, somewhat SRV'ish but he's really got his own thing going on.
Also good to know that real Tele twang is simply a product of porcelain and tile.

It's all right John, Ice is still with us!!
And just for the record, Jesse Davey is alive and kickin' and still only mid thirties. Gary Moore died when you were still on Jersey, John, I suspect that when the news came through, you were out in a home guard party trying to round up the last remaining German fanatics who are still fighting the war, holed up in the caves!! (I said it but I think I got away with it !!)

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
Well okay then, in the "spirit" of greats who went on and are sorely missed...
Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
Yeah Ice - Stevie Marriot another great!!
Do you want only dead people included in your thread, 'cause so far, Corsair thinks that you and Jesse Davey are dead, though for the record, he is not that bothered cause he preferred Rory.
Breaking news for Corsair, SRV is indeed dead!! (only kidding, John !! )

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
Rory was just the nicest guy, too; I had a beer with him and Gerry in about 1979 in Dunedin, NZ when he was touring... very unaffected bloke! Sadly missed...

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
Love Rory! his stage pianist Lou Martin was nearly my step-father...or more accurately he was going out with my mother-in-law for years, I declined the opportunity to attend Rory's funeral with Lou, I just felt I didnt belong there, it turns out Van Morrison made a nuisance of himself in a drunken rage! kinda glad I didnt go.
R.I.P Rory.

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
I love Muddy Waters. i first saw him in a tiny bar in Bethesda Maryland called the PsycheDeli. holds about 100 people totally jam packed. the unofficial house band there was The Nighthawks. i saw them play back-up band for Muddy a few times. Jimi Thackery is an amazing guitar player and alongside Muddy, WOW!
from thackery's bio:
"It was Thackery's time on stage with Muddy Waters that is branded deep within his musical soul. "Muddy was one of those guys who was constantly encouraging. He never told you what to do, but he always told you what you were doing wrong. He never minced words about that.
"The first time on stage with Muddy, I was in such awe of him that I just kept my eyes and ears open and just picked up on everything he did. It was the dynamics they had that became so ingrained in us. We heard it on the records and then stood on stage and saw how it worked."
you can see some of the dynamics in muddy's music in the previous clip too. his rich deep voice was so expressive.
i am currently reading "can't be satisfied - the life and times of muddy waters" by robert gordon. filled with excellent, detailed, vivid descriptions of the life he lived. you can almost hear the music as you read.
apparently there is a PBS American Masters episode about Muddy too, (although i can't figure how to see it). here is an interview with the author and the filmmaker. (interview)
i love Muddy so much, i built myself a tele like his; candy apple red, and rosewood fingerboard.
and here is my recently completed Muddycaster:
i used "original vintage" pickups for it (alnico 3), they sound great!

Re: YOU ALL MUST LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!
and then also there is Rory
another of my oldest and bestest infuences
the man had so much talent it is stunning, he was a great songwriter, a phenomenal guitar player and multi instrumentalist. have you ever seen a road worn mandolin like his? this guy must've played non-stop his whole life. and he made it look like fun too.
i got a chance to meet him when he played washington dc....
and if you have an extra 90 minutes sometime, check this out. it is just fantastic from start to finish. it is a great showcase of the many facets of his musical talent.
