Anyone else had this issue?

Has just been serviced / new strings (as last played 20 years ago!)

I dont use a compressor and the active dosent work either.

Sounds like it might be a wiring/electrics problem - did the service check things like that (they don't always, especially with basses). Possibly it might be a dodgy solder somewhere.
