Bought a light/medium set on the weekend... they seem great. Any opinions on other bass string brands? On the cheaper side were Fender, d'Addario. OTOH, flat wound stuff is pricey.

Hey grogg. These Rotosounds are MUCH brighter than the strings that my bass came with. (I bought a well used BC Rich Mockingbird yesterday). My son likes Rotosounds because the package had a picture of Entwhistle on it. Rotosound bass strings Icon_pirat

The strings were probably very old. Fresh roundwounds are far too bright for my tastes and need worn in. And I typically use Ernie Ball Super Slinkies, but that's because that's all the guy in my tiny little town stocks...

I am no bassist but I string my Kramer bass with DR Extra Life Black Beauties. I like the way they sound (slinky) better than tape wound. I love the way the tape wound strings sounds for clean or Jazz guitar, almost like a standup bass.

I agree; my sister in law is a very good jazz electric bass player - she also plays classical bass; you know... with a bow, and tuba!! - and for the jazz combo she uses an Ibanez Sounndgear with flats which even I can make sound good; she makes it sound spectacular!! This iteration reminds me of a weird anime vignette I saw somewhere...<shaking head> ...what's the source??

Ahhhh yes, Engrish.com. One of my favorite sites. I bought a yo-yo a few years ago just because the choking hazard stated "Do NOT put string around neck and play with in a happy fun manner". And to somewhat get back on subject...I just bought a case of 12 sets of DM Blue Steel for my guitars. I bought a pack last week and strung up the Paduak II, love the sound and feel. Got the case on eBay for $59.99 + $8.95 shipping. They do make a bass string but I have never tried them.

They are a bit lively to start with but doesnt take long to mellow down a bit.
Must try these DM blue steels for the 6 strings, bought a load of Ernie Balls a while back and am not that impressed but have been using them up experimenting with my crappier guitar's setups and pups.

I have a couple of basses, a 70's Fender Precision and a 70's Yamaha SB-35 (the bass version of the Yamaha SG guitar). I have to say that I am a big fan of fresh roundwound strings that give a nice metallic ding. Rotosound are good bass strings but I buy and use Rosetti Bass Strings from a seller on ebay.co.uk the sellers ebay name is reddansette

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROSETTI-BASS-GUITAR-STRINGS-45-105-3-X-SETS_W0QQitemZ360211187726QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Guitar_Accessories?hash=item53de42880e

They only seem to come in the one gauge 45-105 but they are really cheap and ding just like a Rotosound string. I love 'em and I love the price even more.

umpdv5000,

Please post a pic of the SB-35 on the non-Westone section of this board. I have a '74 SG-35 - interested to see the similarities.

Thanks for the tip on the nicely priced strings.

Not the best picture but it was already in photobucket...

Rotosound bass strings YamahaBass

It has 20 frets, 31.5" scale, Maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard, Katsura body, made sometime between 72-75 & I am told they are as rare as rocking horse poo.
