Re: Switchmaster knob
I returned to working in my garage for the first time since my surgery. I could have earlier, but it was cold and I’m a wimp. The first job was to start the trim on the aluminum knobs that knicelyr made.
I made a holder out of foamed PVC board, then clamped the knobs in place. It worked a treat. Two of the knobs turned out great, but the 3rd had a void. When the drill bit caught the edge of the void it tore out a bit of unsupported material, so now there’s a hole on the surface. The drilled hole is a bit off-center, but it’s true, so the knob will still work. I can backfill it with epoxy and it’ll be fine. Next operation will be to drill & tap for set screws, then it’s back to the lathe to turn the surfaces. I’ve already prepared an arbor for that.

Re: Switchmaster knob
I'm constantly amazed (and greatly appreciative) of the talented folks who have shown up over the years in our little corner of the Internet to keep our guitar babies working.
Another huge thank to you Rick for diving into all this and making it happen!

Glad to see they are going to work!
That was a very bad pour

Re: Switchmaster knob
It may not have been a void, but an imperfection in the alloy. The chips coming out were grainy and brittle once I got 5mm in. The others turned and drilled smoothly and made nice chips.

Seems like a bit of 'slag' got in that one.NeilH wrote:It may not have been a void, but an imperfection in the alloy. The chips coming out were grainy and brittle once I got 5mm in. The others turned and drilled smoothly and made nice chips.
Re: Switchmaster knob
I got the knobs drilled & tapped and made some janky grub screws. I only scrubbed them with Scotch Brite, and didn't fill them with epoxy yet, but couldn't wait to see how they looked black. I used Birchwood Casey aluminum black, but didn't clean or prep it, an didn't didn't stick. It revealed more voids, but those won't show once they're painted black.

Re: Switchmaster knob
A long long time ago, on a website far away... I made some of these. I used silicon molds to make resin casts of the ones on my mint condition Super Headless bass, then milled out the centre for some suitable sized aluminium tube which was then drilled and tapped for the grub screw. Later found that a 6mm hole would give a really tight fit, no need for the grub screw. I have about 50 incomplete ones (Just need the pot shaft hole milled out), they are as close to perfect replicas as I could get. Let me know if you'd like them.

Re: Switchmaster knob
Purge,
I am doing similar, can you give me the details on the resin and dye you are using?
I would also like 3 of them.
Thank you,
Rick

Re: Switchmaster knob
Was using, this was years ago. All I can remember is I got the resin and dye from www.tiranti.co.uk . The resin warped a bit if the grub screw was overtightened, tried experimenting with cold metal casting (30% resin 70% iron filings IIRC) which was too brittle before I settled on the aluminiuminserts or a very slightly too small hole for the pot shaft. PM me your address and I'll send you a few.knicelyr wrote:Purge,

Re: Switchmaster knob
I've made one of these knobs on a 3D printer that turned out ok. I'm fairly certain that I got the file on this forum. Need to make another if I can find that file again. I thought a metal one would have been great to have.

Re: Switchmaster knob
You likely did get it here...somewhere.
Several members have made their own SwitchM0aster knobs using various methods, including 3D printing I think.
Our built in search app is not very good. Have a look at Google's "SITE" search parameter results instead and you might find what you're after: LINK
