Possible Acquisition: Concord II -1981 Empty Possible Acquisition: Concord II -1981

Post by Barry Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:06 pm

I may be in a position to pick up a version 1 Concord II over the next couple of days and I'd appreciate any info you can share about this model.
(I've already seen the catalogue info and the review up on the westone.info site.)

Unfortunately, there is no picture available. It's one of those text ads and the seller hasn't bothered to take any! All I know is the serial number, 1120146, and the colour, black. I normally don't care for Strat designs as some of you already know. I'm quite happy with 2 pups and simple switching. But I thought I'd check it out anyway, because...well, it's a Mats fer Pete's sake!

Anyone know anything about the GS350 pups? General sound? Playability? Weirdness? etc.
Thanks and Cheers!

Barry, old horse!

"Possible acquisition" ... doesn't compute. Run, man!! Get it!! Let your legs and wallet be powered by G.A.S. and all the soul-shaking terror (as the vendor sees the look in your eye) that it implies.

A buddy of mine had one a few years back, he said it was a beautiful player. But enough dallying. Go man!

Ah, um...I'll take that as a "buy" then shall I? Razz
Nope, haven't got it yet. Hell, I haven't even seen it yet!

Sometime tomorrow (Friday) I'll take a drive to my local bank machine and see if there's anything left to withdraw (I hate it when those bloody things laugh at you: "You want how much?"!). Then I'll take about a 30 minute drive to have a look see.

I haven't been able to get out of the house the past couple of days...and it hasn't been just the constant bleepin' rain and lightning storms!! It was like every piece of electronic gear in the place decided to go crazy at the same time, including the hard drive in my wife's computer, the operating system in my desktop computer, and the telephone!

I had to hang around waiting for 2 days until the Bell Telephone technician could come look at it, during a vague window of arrival "between "8:00 am and 5:00 pm". That was of course after trying to talk to "customer support" based in India! Meantime, no service. Had to rely on the cell phone. Good thing I don't have dialup internet any more. Shocked Although the digital cable feed has also been cr@p lately.

Same deal with the computer. Tech support was also in, you guessed it, India! 5 days of frustrating "communication" during which they repeatedly (but very politely) ignored the information in my email and steadfastly adhered to their service check list of directions, one of which told me to backup my inaccessible hard drive! (sigh) Since I have an IT background I fiddled with it while they made me burn, and eventually fixed it myself! Incidentally, I highly recommend SpinRite if you have hard drive problems!

And that's what I did on my summer vacation. Now...about this guitar kids...tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow...geez, I'm seriously running out of guitar storage space!

Yeah, I'm somewhat tentative about this one. Violates the 2 PUP rule and all that.
Still, nothing ventured...

More like the games a-tire!
'Twas a miserable 45 minute drive in Friday afternoon 'rush hour' traffic in one of the few summer weather weekends of the year! (Al Gore, stand down...you can bite me later!) Everyone was leaving work early to go enjoy the weekend and highways were jammed.

Anyway...bottom line...I got it!!
It was another strange encounter with a strange fellow with spikey hair and multiple facial piercings. Turns out he doesn't play guitar at all, bass only, but his friend does--sort of. Apparently his friend was about to throw this guitar out!!! Thanks to nose ring boy, it was saved and he researched it a bit, then put it up for sale (just for me)! Whew!

It is supper time as I write this at the end of a very hectic day so no time to take pix right now but I plan to tear her down and clean her up tomorrow. We are FINALLY in the middle of some summer weather...sun and everything! So, I can take a few pictures outdoors as I work.

But as an initial appraisal: overall she's in pretty good condition (1981) with only a few minor body dings. But the neck is immaculate! What a gorgeous clear maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Typical Mats. Feels incredible just like the Westone Spectrums and looks just my Vantage X-77T. Everything appears to work electrically, but the circuitry is scratchy as hell, especially the slider switch, which cuts out a lot. That'll need a bit o'work. But the single coils sound pretty darn good!

Otherwise, just dusty and dirty! What the hell is it with sellers anyway? They can't clean the damn thing up before offering it for sale? Must be a generational thing. (Oh, I'm gonna get emails now)

And as a final comment, whoever strung this thing last must have been on too much cold medication or something...the treble strings were wound backwards causing some consternation as I attempted to tune 'er up (sigh). She was also wa-a-ay sharp, and may be needing a bit of a neck tweak to flatten her out. Otherwise really nice.

Film at eleven!
