Alnico MMK45's?
I wish to axe a kestchun...
I was looking at the cat scan for the Vantage VS600 "Witch" over at the Matsumoku Forum, and I noticed, for the first time (duh), that it came with "Alnico magnets".
http://www.matsumoku.org/models/vantage/catalogs/c1980s/pg2.html
Why am I puzzled you axe? The pups in mine are stamped MMK45, which we have confirmed are ceramics. Both the catalog and my guitar are 1980.
Does anyone have a VS600 with Alnico MMK45's? (and, how to check that anyway)? Is this just another early Mats marketing confusion?
Whatsa happenin' here?

No idea, fella... I'll check to see what my 696-12 has got, and what it's supposed to have.

I'm with Barry on the magnet identification - how can you tell?

Re: Alnico MMK45's?
alnico magnets are metal and will conduct electricity, ceramic magnets will not.
alnico magnets can be distinguished from ceramic magnets by using an ohm meter.
touch both probes to the magnet material
the alnico magnet will read 0 ohms
the ceramic magnet will read infinity ohms
easy

Re: Alnico MMK45's?
Ahh yes, I believe I recall reading that somewhere once upon a time. Thanks Mike.
Now to figure out how many, if any, of my 45's are Alnico. Should take some time to do!
Let's see if the membership is interested enough to join in with this experiment. Could be interesting.

I've got a few 45s spare, so I'll check them, but anything else'll have to wait for string changes!!

Re: Alnico MMK45's?
Spare 45's? Good for you.
All mine are installed and will have to wait for a string change too. I do have UBC's handy and I can confirm that those bad boys are ceramic!
BTW, further clarification for anyone still not sure, if you're using a:
Digital meter ALNICO displays "0" (zero)-CERAMIC shows the numeral "1" (infinity)
Analog meter ALNICO displays "0" (zero)-CERAMIC shows no reading (no needle movement)
Happy prodding!
