I have several followed searches saved in ebay for items that are collection only within a certain mileage of my gaff for this very reason
picked up a Laney amp that retails new for £300 in VGC for £40 the other year

Always worth asking if they would actually send it via courier, too - give them a few pointers about packaging & cheap services & that's sometimes enough to tip the balance. If you're really lucky, you get it at the 'not bidding on that, it's collect only' suppressed price as well...

For the odd guitar I have bought from people who are "collection only because it is too difficult to pack and heavy to post", I have just sent them a hard case (costs less than a tenner) and then got them to drop off at a parcel drop-off (cost - another tenner) = guitar in my grubby mits

Some good tips there, will try to remember them!
