Sett neck repair Empty Sett neck repair

Post by Meadows Sun Apr 19, 2015 8:52 am

Hi Guys

Just a quick question if I may

Would you ever buy a sett neck that has had a repair at the neck-body joint?. This example has been professionally repaired but I am still not confident it has not had a lasting effect.

Many thanks as always

Generally speaking Si, a glued joint will be stronger than the area surrounding it.

Is this a true 335 style with a centre block or is it a completely hollow body like a 330? Either way I don't think I'd be overly concerned, particularly if the job appears to have been done well and the neck is at the correct angle to the body, etc.

Thanks Barry for your reply, that gives me faith and some peace of mind.

I had to make a quick decision earlier today and needed some experienced advice. Fingers crossed it has been fixed to a high standard but wont know for sure now for another two weeks due to delivery and timings.....

However at long last I should be the new and proud owner of a 1981 Rainbow I. Due to language differences, getting further information and decent images has proved almost impossible but I am hoping this transaction (live from the Med) will have a positive outcome.

At last a Westone Jazz box at a price I could afford Smile

Good luck!
I was going to guess at a rainbow 1, but it looks like a different one,  the one I saw was UK listed.

Great score. I hope it all works out OK.
I'd love to find a Rainbow over 'ere, in any shape.  Sad

Thanks Guys

Pete, it probably is the same one, the guy lives in Cyprus most of the time, I think he is of Greek origin but he couldn't elaborate on the neck joint damage/repair.

Here is the link

£175, I think it's a fair price and worth the punt

Hey Barry, if I don't bond with the Rainbow for any reason, it's yours, just pay the postage and applicable tax, no worries Smile

Cheers man, just want to hear those 750's first hand. Only ever had one other jazz box, didn't get on with the body size but I leaning more towards that sound at the moment so going to try and get back on the horse.

Not sure how light I can go on the strings, I normally play 9's but guess this may prefer flats and something slightly heavier.

This guys plays an Ibanez jazz box and I really like his sound, looking to find something similar(ish)

Si! So very generous of you mate. I sincerely appreciate the gesture, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, eh?
I think once you have her you're gonna luv her!   Wink

Sett neck repair Empty Re: Sett neck repair

Post by Meadows Fri May 08, 2015 12:33 pm

Well the Rainbow I s/n 2064176 (1981) has finally arrived all the way from the sunny Med. Wasn't too sure what to expect due to the language differences and the low res photos and yes there are one or several battle scars that I am trying to see beyond at the moment given the low price I paid.

The neck at some stage has been repaired at the heel but seems very stable, it's holding pitch well and the lacquer around the heel will obviously require attention at some stage. The back has taken a bump at some point and someone has maybe tried to move the rear strap button.

Overall first impressions, a tad neck heavy, very very resonant when unplugged. The neck with brass nut is very easy to get around and a pleasure to play even with the larger body on the strap.

And then I plugged her in...no sound on the neck, a quick clean of the toggle and we were away and quite frankly, Wow!!! these 750 pickups are full and rich sounding, loads of power there but with lots of tonal clarity, both clean and with a little drive they just sing and the sustain is far better than my Cutlass.

It's early days, I think I'm pleased Very Happy . A bit disappointed in the cosmetics but it's all relative to price I guess.

Going to clean her up tonight and gig her tomorrow. Not sure the bridge is original as the studs protrude so high, but that can be sorted.

Here are some images as I received her. Oh and as an aside, never use paper shreddings for packing a guitar with 'F' holes,Why?... cause you fill it up...... not clever Mad

Shame about the finish. Man, that really shattered eh? The good news is that it looks like everything is structurally OK. The finish can be repaired, but a pain in the arse nonetheless.

The important thing is that she sounds great! Well done you.

Shredded paper...it's not just for parades anymore. Roll on Floor Laff

Thanks Barry, hopefully the hoover extension has got them all out.

Just stripped her down and given her a good polish, it's actually coming up pretty well with the grime and wear removed. Frets are really good. A mate of mine is a cabinet maker and I'm going to get him to look at the lacquer situation.

The bridge and saddle are non original and will need changing, they are both a bit bodged. Will post a wanted for originals or suitable replacements.

Definitely going to gig her tomorrow night, although I will pack a spare Smile

Very nice Si,  not too extreme considering!

I've been stripping down my prestige 250 with the repaired neck break this week, and the headstock binding I've finished, the missing lacquer I sorted with a touch of dye then superglue fill and it turned out great for zero expense Smile

You're right about about those mmk75's,  power, clarity and definition,  love it!

Si.

I bought these in brass for the prestige, they are 1mm short in height, but otherwise the same dimensions, these took so long to find!

http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/All_Hardware_and_Parts_by_Instrument/Electric_Guitar/Saddles/Saddles_for_ABR-1_Tune-o-matic_Bridges.html

I can also grind down some brass saddle screws I bought if you find an original bridge, mine was missing a couple they these work perfectly.

Thank you, I think you are right, I've been looking at getting a Rainbow for quite a while but the prices have always been above what I thought Mrs Meadows would accept or feel comfortable with. She actually said this evening that she was pleased this was a keeper and thought it sounded great for the gigs I am playing at the moment...bonus.

Pete, I am wearing a bit of a beer head as I type (just finished a show) but will study the info you have sent in the morning with fresh eyes and will pm you accordingly, thanks mate. bON SOIR
