Post by Westbone Wed Dec 18, 2013 11:10 am

Check out the bidding on this.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Electric-guitar-Westone-Rainbow-II-1983-Japan-Matsumoku-vintage-hollow-body-/251405109408
Same fella/gal put similar bids on a white Thunder IIA.
Doesn't the idiot realise they're just pushing the price they might have to pay sky high.
Not that I mind.... Smile

is he not just bidding until he reaches a previously entered figure by another buyer?......but he's going up in small increments trying to get it for the cheapest price possible?

just a theory.

I am going to state the obvious here, but the only important stage to lead an auction is the very end.

If you continue to improve upon someone else's bid throughout an auction, you will provoke a response from someone who is similarly minded. This of course, drives the price up.

I only ever bid with 13 seconds or less to run. If I had been vying with another one or two parties throughout the auction, then the price would be significantly higher than it is is for me at 13 seconds to run.

My strategy is to decide what I wish to pay, put an autobid on and walk away.

No stress, no mess!

I'm with Hoax, 10 seconds to go, and add a penny over the pound  Smile  you'd be suprised how many auctions Ive won with that penny.

If you do what John does, then you are constantly outbidding the next best bid, so at the end of the auction, you will have paid more than you had to.

I have tried the Sarge's method, but too many people do that. It is with 13 seconds to go, I decide how much I want to pay and sometimes go 20 or 30% over the best bid at that time.

Have to say their bidding technique does seem a bit strange but notice that their bids are going in at 1-2sec intervals which is some rapid rebidding so maybe there's 3rd party bidding software involved putting all those small bids in.

I'm with the majority at bidding in the last seconds and if the price goes over my budget before that I walk away.

Perhaps it's some misguided attempt to block anyone else from bidding by creating an "electronic wall" around the auction.

Still stupid.  Rolling Eyes

I like my way because I loathe auctions; I set my price - always an weird number - and let the thing look after itself.
Only once did I sit and actively watch the end of auction, and not knowing anything about online auctions and on a PC rather than my iMac, forgot to refresh the page and lost the guitar..... it went for bugger-all, too!!
So now, I set and forget!

I mean if you list a guitar and some idiot uses that bidding method to hike up the price, it's a bonus.

That's good news for some of us but not so good for others. To be honest, £500 is still a bit cheap when you compare it against the  prices asked for Matsumoku made Epiphone Sheratons.
