Matsumoku..??? Empty Matsumoku..???

Post by bobroberts Mon Jul 09, 2012 9:10 am

Hi,
Seen this on the bay of evil. Guy says Matsumoku, but does anyone know whether it is or not? I'm waiting for a reply regarding branding, and evidence of it being one of uncle Mat's. Can't see any brand name on the pics he's posted.. Looks a nice thing - whatever it is.. Any ideas?

Looks nicely made, likely MIJ at least...but why is there no shot of the headstock? scratch

My cynical nature says he's hinting at Mats to push the price up a bit - note his use of keyword spam - headstock might help dis-prove his Mats claims, maybe...?

As you say - looks nicely made, anyway!

Seen it on Evilbay too an thought a bout it myself..
looks good but hondo ,satalite ,aria,Ibanez an teisco all did strat copies..
Think Ibanez used a strat headstock without truss rod cover..
The others had a stratish style headstock with a trussrod cover..
If its cheapish go for it as it will be well built...

Yep, I suspect using Mat name to bump up price.

Also suspicious cos no shot of headstock!!!

Indeed! I wouldn't pay the Mat premium unless I knew 100% it was a Mat. It's a nice looking thing, and that's what I'm going on, unless it can be proven that it is what he says..

Think it's a Aria by the look of it...
Wouldn't swear on it but it might be bitsa Aria... Well the neck at least..
The body could be anything...

Well, he's cleared up any slight doubts I might have had with this message - just received:

Hi, The principal evidence that it's a matsumoku are, of course, the matsu electrics - same as these.. 140549534952 the bevel for your right arm has a more noticeable "edge" than on other guitars, the neckplate is narrower than you'd expect, the head has a fillet of wood to make the "flag", the truss rod has a capstan-type adjuster at the heel end with a cut in the scratchplate to allow access, and the trem-block is marked S.T.C Made In Japan.
It's identical to Kimbaras, a CMI I sold a few weeks ago, and a bunch of other much-prized matsumoku's I've owned and played over the years,
Hope that helps,
All best to you,
Paul

Are Mats guitars known for their narrow neck plates? I know Hondo are.

No headstock picture either, mmmhmm.

I hear those neckplates can be removed and swapped around fairly easily... Suspect

That's not necessary a Mats. Just because it has a MIJ bridge.

There where 10's of makers doing the same thing back in the day.
Have a look around this site.

Well - that seems to be the consensus.. I asked him how he knew it was a Mats, and for some evidence, and he just spouted a load of gobbledigook, which proved nowt (to me, at least). I just added the update of the current bids, to show how suggesting a guitar is made by X, and throwing a bit of keyword spam in for good measure, can really bump the price up..!

My Kimbara had the typical triple laminate neck. this one doesn't. I doubt if it is Matsumoku.
