Looks like a fairly easy project that could turn out pretty cool.

Just about everything is still intact, and that "crack" appears to be only a stress fracture to the surface finish only. Nuthin' serious. Although you wonder what might have caused it eh?

Hell of a deal for someone here. Somebody grab it!!

That's a VA912; I've played one and they are utterly fantastic..... replacing those machines could be problematic...

i knew you would chime in eh - is it the same one you have pics of? - The grain on the headstock is really nice. As far as the tuners, it would be worth using 3rd party ones, even if it meant altering the holes a bit. The tail piece is kinda cool too.

Since you've actually played one John you'd know better than I, so I'm only speculating here...but did the knobs on the originals need to "nest" or was the the odd-sized originals more for ease of string ID and tuning?

The odd shaped heads on the machines, you mean?! I assume they were like that for ease of tuning, and believe me, they do work!

As far as I could see, the only difference between them was the winder button itself; everything else was stock Gotoh.... Perhaps you can still get them?

Yep... It is! Elegant tailpiece, isn't it.... the owner of that 912 has just bought an immaculate blackburst Vantage VS-696/12, which has an interesting feature on the saddles; they have three slots cut into them, a set of 2 for a 12, and one in the middle of the saddle, for use as a 6!!

Now that's a smart low cost design idea! Makes me curious. How heavy are these animals John? Pain in the neck on stage but great in the studio I reckon?

I'll ask Don to weigh them; I don't recall them being too hellish; I used my VA900 on stage for years ....

well I should make a dent with the 350 and the spectrum body on the way at least

Went for $276, was going for it but there seemed to be a bit of a snipe war at the end.
