Specs On Pickups From A X390

Happy Friday Everybody- I picked up a x390CB a few months back and I am really loving the guitar. There were a few things that were not original on it, most importantly the pickups were changed to EMG's. The original knobs were also replaced.
Of course I would have wanted the guitar to be all original, but I bought it to play not collect. I can live with the EMG's since I have always found ways for them to work with certain rigs I've used. Recently I had some custom pickups wound for me for an old PRS that I wanted to breathe some new life into. I worked with Mick from Manlius Pickups and he came up with some great PAF type pickups that just happened to be great sounding when using the coil split, which is something that just isn't really easy to do. Since I had such a great experience working with Mick the first time around I am thinking I just may ask him to try to take his spin on replicating these great MMK 75's that owners of all original x390's rave about. Can anyone help me out with giving me some links or other bits of info on these MMK 75's? I've been able to get an idea that these are special because of the unbalanced coils approach that Tom Presley explained a bit in one of the postings he was kind enough to do. Anyone else out there looking to recreate some of the magic in these pickups?

I cannot say I am exactly certain that a '75 is a UBC but I could be quite incorrect with that guess. I can take some readings for you if you would like for a baseline to shoot for. Colt933 has owned as many a 4 or 5 of them in the past so he may have some insights he can share.

Finding a replacement could be nigh impossible as I couldn't say either what they were put into besides x350's and x390's. Seems that I have read many tales over at Harmony Central of owners removing them, perhaps posting a wanted inquiry there could yield results.

Hey there Iceman, hope all is well! It would be awesome if you could take a few readings for me to have as a guideline. As far as if the 75 in the x390's is an unbalanced coil humbucker I'm not really sure either (especially since I don't have any) but I thought that I had read that here on the forums a while back.

Ok Squege, here is what I know for certain...

On the x390 the bridge pup checks 8.52 ohms and neck pup is at 8.46 ohms. When you split the coils the readings are nearly half on the dot. With the selector switch in the middle position the pups together read about 4.3 ohms and when split around half again (2.23 ohms).

The readings on my x350 are virtually identical to the untapped numbers above. MMK75's should be alnico magnets with oxygen-free copper wire coils.

If you are looking for a pair of replacements I do not know if any other Westone models were equipped with them. They were stock in some of the higher end APII builds like the PE-Rxx series, but your chances of finding a set that way are just about nil as well I am thinking.

On a par with Gibbo PAFs. Probably alnico 2 magnets as they're quite defined. Might be 3's. Very clear sounding pup but not feeble.

My beloved just spent 20 minutes or so checking out the x350 and the harmonics are chiming crystal with little effort on a clean channel. Bright certainly, but still quite warm without any hint of sterility in them.

The tonal range produced just with that single knob is wide, WIDE, W I D E !!

Alinco 2 mags are great for the PAF vibe and give that clear but warm tone. Splitting to single coil is where things can get tough, but the Manlius Fat Diane that Mick wound for me is the best coil-tapped humbucker I've ever played. Let the mission begin...

I think Oliver in Deutschland might have some spare pups that he might be willing to part with. I have a couple of spares, but I'm not certain I would let them go.

I bet Duncan '59s or similar 'PAF-style' would be just fine.

I've been using DiMarzio Tone Zone (bridge) and Fred (neck) in one of my X-390s and they sound killer!
