The Westone sell off continues. A brace of spectrum ST's today:

A sinister black one HERE,

And a squeaky clean white one HERE.

How does a spec compare with a thunder 1?

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" There's no short answer to that one but in the end, I guess it comes down to preference. Physically they share a similar body shape and of course that neck!

Depending what years, production run, etc you may or may not the same pup's, and the circuitry is different. The Thunder weighs a bloody ton, the Spectrum you can sling around yer neck all night.

Both are versatile tone generators but the Thunder will leave the Spectrum in the dust as far as sustain, possible combinations and sheer horsepower. The Spec has perfectly (for me) acceptable range of sounds for 80% of what I would do, and it just "feels right" when you lay hands on it.

But if you're a power lead-type player you'll go nuts with the Thunder. I've made it sound like everything from an acoustic to a screaming Strat and even a blusey kinda LP. It's a staggeringly versatile guitar, but I wouldn't want to be carrying her all night! I'm too old and brittle, ya know?

Yep, Barry's pretty much nailed it... but... I used my ST onstage a couple of times and it absolutely blew me away; those MMK45's are the duck's nuts, they really are!!
The Thunders will sustain till next week and the Spectrums not so much - lighter woods etc, and the active Thunders will shatter glass and wreak havoc with eardrums but in real terms, they're both great tone generators!
I have a weakness for Spectrums and will defend them unto death....

Because I smashed my finger with a hammer (DIY is dangerous and my son was enquiring why its black) am having difficulty playing so in a frustrated moment thought I would compare sustain on my guitars. Plucking D string with 12th fret intonated and a slow count reckon I got:-
Thunder 1 - 10
Strat - feeble 6
ANother - 12

The other obvious thing was the T1 was much much louder (no actives cos I dont like them).

The white one is a bargain, someone go for it.
I promise nobody will be disappointed. As the two old fellas already pointed out,
the guitar sounds just brilliant, it's light around your neck.
And the sounds Very Happy Cool Laughing cheers bom

O.k., I never laid my hands on a thunder so far, none to find on the continent,
but there's always space for another guitar.

Bought myself my 1st Avenger, but this is a different story.

The white ST went for £91 + £15 p+p, a fair price I reckon.

The black one has been re-listed with 10 quid less, for £129.99 + £12.50 p+p within the UK.

Exactly like mine!
(Um, except, you know, for the Schaller PUP in the bridge Embarassed )
Not a bad price as long as it goes no higher!

Looks very straight indeed; maybe I'm just a cheap bastard... well, OK, I AM a cheap bastard, but that's getting quite dear for what was the base model, eh!! Mine cost the NZ equivalent of £29 just 2 years ago... and I've seen one or two since - there's one in an Invercargill pawn shop atm - that got passed in at about NZ$180...
