PEQ Tone Control?
Hi all. Playing with my Prestige 150 lovely thing that it is!
I have a query on the PEQ tone control. I've searched the forum but can't seem to get the full information I'm after.
I know that the control is supposed to give single/humbucker control, but what are the exact positionings of the tone control?
What is fully anti-clockwise, centre indent, and fully clockwise? Is it just splitting/merging coils, or is there tone control mixed in there? Is it the same for neck and bridge coils?
Here's a funny thing too. I was trying to get Gilmour strat another brick in the wall solo sound, ie compressed neck single coil with a little distortion. What I noticed was that at centre ident there was no noise, as I turned it clockwise to middle of centre indent/fully clockwise (I assume going to single coil), I got some 50Hz buzz as you would expect from a single coil, but when I turned it up further, the buzz seemed to clear up, hinting that it was going away from a single coil setting. How is this explained?
I'm sure you experts know these things!
Cheers

Re: PEQ Tone Control?
Ok, thanks Barry (thought you might answer!). Explains part of it, but not the coil splitting arrangement. Or how the noise changes as the pot varies.
Now I suppose I have to wait for Westbone, too........

Re: PEQ Tone Control?
AFAIK the PEQ has nothing to do with coil splitting. As the description says, it's a proprietary tone pot only. Changing the tone can give "a sound like a split coil" but it does not do any physical splitting. On other Prestige models you do have coil splitting options but they're done via the usual push-pull knobs, not a PEQ
Any "noise" you're hearing is likely oxidation on the wiper. Give it a squirt of electrical contact spray, then yank the knob like a monkey in a mango tree!

Re: PEQ Tone Control?
Center detent is full humbucker in series(normal humbucker sound)
Fully up clockwise is full humbucker in parallel (thinner single coil type sound)
The noise you hear is the pot wiring switching it over.
Not a good sound in between the two really.
Turning it from center detent anti clockwise is as a normal tone control hence more bassy.
So you will only have tone control on full humbucker in series.
Happy now.

Re: PEQ Tone Control?
Ok thanks guys. Makes sense. I suppose it's never going to be a proper strat sound (use my strat for that). It gets reasonably close though.

Re: PEQ Tone Control?
Interesting note... if you experience squeal at high volume or with much gain, the PEQ at full clockwise mostly eliminates the unwanted feedback (at least it does on both of my Prestige models).
Aside from installing a coil tapping option, the most versatility you'll get from your 150 will be the coils in parallel.
Aren't the Prestige models wonderful? Excellent quality and style.
