Westone Cutlass Empty Westone Cutlass

Any thoughts on the Cutlass or other Poole variants of the Westone?

I realise they are nothing to do with the original brand/creator but I reckon they look very nice and the neck joint looks really neat.

They seem to be a bit rare and show up in various states of repair, sometimes for quite big money, but I thought I might look out for one.

Cheers,

I don't own one but I think you'll find that those who do hold them in high regard.
One of the lads with some first hand experience should be by shortly.

Meantime, have a look HERE if you haven't already seen this for some background information on Cutlass.

Ta. Yep, had a look at that. I certainly like how they look and the lineage (Poole) is impressive.

They have the obvious Jaguar/Mustang thing going on but with a sort of 90's minimalist makeover.

There's a baby blue one for sale on eBay right now but the price is a bit daft especially since it has a large ding in it and has been resold several times over the last few years (so maybe not a great example).

Westbone, how on earth do you come by all these? Were you once a Westone dealer? Do you drive the country visiting small guitar shops looking for old stock? One of them still has the cellophane on the scratchplate!!!

I love the pics but I am more amazed by the scope of your Westone collection.

Is that three Cutlass models BTW?

Yeah, the pale blue colour is probably my favourite but the one on eBay is a bit battered:

There was a black one for sale a few weeks back on eBay that didn't sell. Owner only wanted £200 but got no bids. In fairness the black would not be my first choice either. Very briefly entertained buying and refinishing in blue but quickly had a word with myself.

Natural looks good too and I gather means the body is alder rather than poplar which some people would say makes it slightly superior.

I guess the cellophane example is an investment piece?

Sure is a thick dollop of paint on the poplar timber one's.

Hi Iep

I'm with Damian on the Cutlass range, they are indeed excellent guitars. I have three classics, all alder bodied and two of those are my main gigging and recording instruments. They cover most styles of music, the neck for me is a dream, the neck pocket design gives great upper access and the build quality is top shelf.

If you don't mind a slightly heavier body weight, the Corsair customs offers the five position switch and coil tap on the bucker. Being an old fart now I prefer a lighter weight body so the alder suits me for longer gigs. All I can add is if you see a good example come up, even at a slightly inflated price, give it a try, they don't come up very often and for good reason. I don't know how many were originally made but my serial numbers suggest only hundreds ( could be wrong of course).

Good luck in your search
