Either way it's quite nice.

Well after staring at it for a bit.  I'm guessing when they added the middle humbucker they decided to refinish the guitar.  Looks good to me.

Agreed on all counts except one.  The right HB sounds nice in the center... I used a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack in mine and I still get that nice "quacky" sound when I turn it on.  Coupled with the JB in the neck, it gives me a great "Life in the Fast Lane" kind of sound.  But admittedly, the stacked humbucker sounds much more like a single-coil anyway (you could even go as far as to say that it's more of hum-cancelling single coil than a humbucker).  I agree that most HB's would get kind of pointless and redundant in the center.

Still an intriguing guitar worth keeping an eye on, though!

In my backyard, I asked him about it.  

It was done by someone before him.  No idea what the pickups are, and just a cheap trem as well.  It was refinished.  He sent me hazy pics, the route doesn't look well done... so it scared me.
