... we have a Spectrum ST Bass and a Vantage VA900 on stage at a gig in Dunedin, NZ.



It was this bass that impressed enough to find my own Westone bass quite some time later... about 20 years later, to be exact!

Ha! Thanks, Barry! That Vantage now resides with 2 other 900s, a 912 and a 900B in rural Australia! If I had to gig again, it'd be the Genesis II or the Avenger 395...

Can't beat those classic dance covers for cutting your teeth. Haven't played any covers out live in a while but always fancied doing a full "Blues Brothers" set complete with a horn section, just for the craic

Yeah, it's funny but I remember having an awful lot more pure fun playing covers for people who'd dance at the drop of a hat than playing so-called serious tunes for people who would sit and watch/listen!
Absolutely loved playing with horns... those people generally have chops that burn me without even trying and boy; do they add to a tune! Hard to do justice to EW&F, Chicago or - my personal favourite - Quincy Conserve without horns, eh....

My band was all about cover tunes (in fact our one and only studio demo "album" was dubbed Cover Me).

The music was familiar and liked by the audience so there was an almost automatic response and folks quickly got into a party mood. Dancing=sweating=more beer sales=return engagement. Rinse. Repeat.

Never had the chance to play with a horn section. Always wanted to though.

We often get (usually) young fellers in the shop who will shred the daylights out of a guitar. Impressive, but who in hell would sit and listen to that all night, let alone pay to hear it?

Pity... those links won't work here, but yeah; GOOD outfit!! I was never, ever as talented or as hard working as those fellas but enjoyed trying to cover their tunes!! I think Malcolm Hayman as a vocalist had the wood on David Clayton-Thomas, too....

The first link was "Lullu Belle" with Murray Loveridge playing an amazing bass.

The second link was "S.L.U.T" full of classic horn stabs and that funky guitar break. Loved Volcano too and then I found the Kool and the Gang cover of "Funk Stuff".

Never understood why he isn't more in the mainstream spotlight. Much preferred to watch him over Michael Jackson back in the day.

He wouldn't be my favourite artiste, but gee; he's a talented bloke and his shows - the ones that I've seen on the telly - have never been anything but ball-tighteningly tight... really classy gigs.

Interesting that he's on a Tele rather than his Cloud guitars....

Long time no speak, hope everyones in good shape. Really really enjoyed all those youtube links. That bass line in the first one from Meadows (Quincy) was a blower. Amazing that the number of views are so low. Prince as amazing as youd expect, some nice theatre, incredible talent like him or not.

Anyway just got me some tickets to see Robert Cray at BB Kings club in NY. Woohoo, big apple here I come.
