Hi gents, I know Sarge has only recently been after one of these  - just wondered if anyone else had one spare that wasn't being used?

Cash waiting...or maybe swap for MMK pups etc?

If none spare then a heads up as to a suitable solution on fleabay etc would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello mr lyst. I have one from a thunder 1a 6 string, although I don't know the date or if it works! I also have one ( I think) from a thunder bass, maybe you could post a pic and I can see if mine matches up?

Ps, I am talking about just the small circuit board in the control cavity, there are no wires or controls attached.

Thanks for the reply Clive.

I think it should look like this...
http://www.westoneguitars.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Thunder-IIA-wiring-version-1.jpg

If the Thunder was from '81 or '82 then it could well be the right one.....maybe someone could clarify this for me?

I assume once we have the board the rest is a wiring issue.

Cheers Clive...much appreciated.

...maybe even an early '83 would be ok?

Ok, I have a feeling it may be an 83, it has no neck or date stamp but will try to match it up to your photo later tonight.

Here are a couple of pics for you, the chip?? has different numbers on it to the one in your photo, but all the bits look to be in the same place, sort of, oh yes, it has got the wires on!

I thought it was jut the board.

Wow...that looks pretty damn close to me....

Would it be possible for someone with more electrical knowledge than I to confirm that this is the early active gain circuit...or course, whether it works or not is another issue  Laughing

If it is you've got yourself a sale mate....maybe we can sort the cash transaction bit out via pm?

Thanks again for the speedy reply, much appreciated.

Early active gain circuitry Empty Re: Early active gain circuitry

Post by Catalyst Mon Jul 28, 2014 1:19 pm

Got the gear safe and sound Clive, very much obliged.  Very Happy

On closer inspection it seems that the loom and pots etc are set up for the Version 2 circuit i.e. eq tone pot instead of active gain pot and 6 point (terminology?) connector block beneath the active switch.

So my question is, are the main circuit boards interchangeable between the Version 1 and Version 2 if the wiring configuration is still achievable?

I definitely have the 12 point connector block beneath the active on/off switch....but not 100% sure if I have the 'active gain' pot?...that's assuming it is different from the EQ tone pot of course?

Any assistance from you knowledgeable gents would be really appreciated before I set fire to something   Laughing

No problem!
Afraid I can't help with the active circuits as I either never use them or pull them out completely!
I'm sure someone will be along with an answer soon.

I have an active gain pot on some of my basses, the only difference I can see is the active gain has a center indent, are the wiring diagrams on this site no good to you?
Will take the back off a bass that is original tonight and take note of the active gain pot spec.

I saw that Westbone thanks...I just needed confirmation that the 'red' boards are the same on all 3 options, they look similar but on closer inspection are slightly different.

So which circuit do you have?  The only difference with your existing pots and switches should be the active on/off switch is a 12 terminal 4pdt for the gain circuit,  I think.....

Sorry, I'm making this difficult aren't I   Smile
I have the 12 terminal 4pdt etc that goes with V1 in my guitar but no board or loom....but the board/loom that Clive has sent me is out of a V2 thunder as it has no 12 terminal 4pdt.
Can I simply take the red board out of Clive's V2 arrangement and use it in a V1 set up?

Ohhhh  crikey I don't know!
It looked identical to my gain board from the pics,  same op amp chip too,  so while I have absolutely no idea, I'd say definitely yes  Very Happy
Wire it all up and see,  shouldn't take too long,  I did mine really quick after worrying it was beyond me.

Laughing ...no idea but definitely yes..thanks pal..i think

I assume they are the same...but if they are why would they change it from V1 to V2 if V1 was considered better?...its questions like this that keep me up at night  Laughing

The wiring diagrams look easy to follow, so as long as the red board is the same in all 3 versions then I should be laughing.

Thanks for all the info gents, appreciated.

First of all a huge thanks for the help gents, especially Clive for sending me his spare circuit which is now installed and working....  So Happy

Not done anything to it yet apart from get the active circuit installed but looks pretty sweet already!
The active gain really works well in comparison to the on or off switch on my Thunder 1....still thunders but in a more controlled kinda fashion.  Cool
