Volume Pots
OK, so this isn't quite a Westone technical query, but it nearly is...
I've just got a Westbury Deluxe (to join the purple Westbury Standard I've got). It needs a bit of work and the bridge volume pot is somewhat knackered. It works intermittently, and the spindle moves in and out a lot.
I've just replaced it with a Log500k pot, but it doesn't quite sound right. It seem noticeably quieter than the neck pick-up. I think it definitely sounded a bit louder before. They are super distortion and dual sound Dimarzios. The neck still "goes all the way up to 11" on the volume stakes, but the bridge seems about 7.
The old pot had nothing written on it to check values and when I try measuring it I can't get a steady reading, it jumps about a lot.
Anyone got any ideas?

Re: Volume Pots
Are you sure that you're wiring is all correct?

Re: Volume Pots
Measure the other pots and use the same?

Re: Volume Pots
Yes, wiring correct and old solder blob is not very big, so writing would be small. I could try cleaning the solder off I suppose but not sure how successful that would be
Regarding checking other pot, if I set three way selector to the bridge pick-up position, I assume I could measure the neck pick-up without un-soldering a connection...

Re: Volume Pots
I've had another look at old pot removed. There is something stamped on it, but impossible to read. The other volume pot is a linear (B) 500k Ohm one though, not Log (A) version.
I think I'll get another B version and see how it sounds.

Re: Volume Pots
I have Westbury Standards, a Deluxe and a Custom. I will check pots tomorrow and post.
I really don't think it will make any difference if you have used a lin rather than a log pot or vice versa.
I would just check the resistance from my jack plug using an multimeter set to 20 ohms. Switch from neck to bridge with the volumes and tones al the way up
You should get about 13k plus for each pick up. You may have a coil out and the reading will be about 6.5k.
Hoax
Another thought is, if your coils are wired by mistake in parallel rather then series then you will get 13k but it will sound weedy. Try also flicking the mini toggle when you test.

Re: Volume Pots
Thanks for assistance. I didn't think the log or linear pot really would make a difference to max volume either.
The wiring is OK. I have put it back exactly as before. The micro switch works fine on the bridge pick-up still. You can tell the difference between off and on.
I'll do the resistance checks tonight and double check the solder connections, just in case

Re: Volume Pots
Adey, see THIS POST for how to measure pickups as mentioned above.

Re: Volume Pots
SORTED!
(user error )
After checking all connection (again) and checking none were dry (again), I then started to question if the three way was working properly because the bridge pick-up wasn't working in mid position.
I checked it out with meter and all fine, but still nothing from bridge in middle position. Hmmmm
I then had a close look at the wiring and noticed that the neck is wired through both volume pots so it works as my Epiphone Les Paul does, if you turn the neck pick up right down, the bridge stops working too.
Anyway, once I had had a good twang in all positions and volume options I have decided that ....
.....it's all fine after all!!!!!
Doh!
