Washburn Jazz Box
This is so nice not to put up for a peak at.
Washburn L-4 early 80's, not a Mats, possible Yamaki but electrics are Noble so possibly US.
Solid spruce top, solid maple bookmatched back and by the looks of it solid maple sides.Ebony fingerboard, 7 piece neck.
Fine tune tailpiece.
Very well crafted instrument. Beautiful.
Plays fine too.

Re: Washburn Jazz Box
Oh, that looks really nice and well preserved! Very interesting tailpiece too!
When I saw Noble imprinted on the pot I immediately thought... Nobuaki Hayashi, but as I now understand there is an American maker with that name?
I heard good things about the Washburn J6 too but that is a bigger box guitar think L5 ces. Just saw 2 Hondo Fatboy (a Hondo & a Hondo II that is) listings (they come in different varieties). Still have to find Hondo catalogue scans! (Dan, Duofuzz once posted a link but it's dead unfortunately. Did you save a copy Hoax?).
I own one one of these and I'm pretty sure it is not a MIJ guitar! And not on par! (although Japanese builds might exist) It is almost the same as This One listed with only very few differences.
Now, I totally fail to understand why they didn't clean it before the auction photoshoot! It lost the pickguard, no mention. Look at that terrible, I mean terrible paintjob I can hardly imagine it left the factory like that! Repainted...? One piece neck. The 'upgraded' tuners and how! I'm not even sure that is an ebony fretboard. And last but not least the asking price!!! If this shop cares about it's reputation I totally completely fail to understand why they present it in this way and with a price-tag like that! (even though they don't claim it is MIJ!)
Now HERE is another one listed. It is quite different and it is a Hondo not a Hondo II but it is presented in a rather much nicer, transparent way. But here is the MIJ claim again and no proof as to why. I'dd like to see some convincing evidence, other than that it is written somewhere.
I think your Washburn is way nicer and it's shape somewhat reminds me more of a Herb Ellis (L4 copy?) I think. If it was made at the Yamaki plant it explains the attention for detail, they have been making some impressive guitars. Thanks for the pics!

Re: Washburn Jazz Box
Here's a rare Hondo colour, kind of copper metallic.
And another Hondo 'box' H937
There's one on ebay UK

Re: Washburn Jazz Box
Thanks, nice! As a sidenote, I noticed your Washburn has f-holes almost the exact same as the Aria Pro II 'Ike Isaacs' TA-1500 model, they stand out! The volute, back of the headstock where it meets the neck is constructed a lot like how Ibanez guitars made at Fujigen (e.g. FG-100) were. As word has it Wing and Stage series might have been produced at Matsumoku. Others, I don't know. Confusing!
Some Hondo's might have even been produced in Taiwan maybe. Ever came across other 'fat' body Hondo's or Hondo II's ? Did you think those were MIJ? Those Hondo's in your pics look much nicer than that ridiculous first one listed I pointed to (Crisis, what crisis?) even though they might have been made at Samick. (they improved over time)

Re: Washburn Jazz Box
Information is a bit vague on Hondo's
I think 'fat boys' were made in Korea, some have different labels inside.
ie. model no. No sign of the 'FB' on certain labels. These 'no FB' guitars are the early Fat Boys before they acquired the nickname.
Some Hondo's were made at Mats. during the very early 80's
Some at Tokai.
Here's a Tokai Strat copy, basicly a Tokai Strat with a different shape headstock and obviously branded Hondo.
Even has a Tokai serial no.
Another Tokai Hondo
Also with a Tokai neckplate

Re: Washburn Jazz Box
What a strange coincidence. I've just bought a nice old Washburn, but it's an acoustic and it was made in Korea. I'm planning on posting a pic to show how similar it looks to my Westone Session.

Re: Washburn Jazz Box
Nice, but...this really does not belong in this thread at all because it's time sensitive and the link will become irrelevant.
Please make future posts like this in the For Sale forum. Thx.

Fat Boy sold for £171 all in
Would have spent a bit more for a good one, plenty work there!!
Those stains at the neck are deeeep into the wood....
