anybody else notice the markings at the end of the fretboard between 21st & 22nd fret?
can't make out what is there. somebody's name maybe?

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
Yeah I can't make that out either so I contacted the seller questioning it. I picked up an x275cs from danagos earlier last year and it sure doesn't have any such markings on the board.
Unmolested the auction says, huh??

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
Stringlock is a replacement, as is the knob. That could be the word Pantera on the fretboard???

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
I pondered that as well John. Only the x350 had fretboard markings / stamping on it, afaik...
Also, after examining the stringlock you spotted I noticed something else interesting about the headstock. Anyone else see what I see??? (... hint, and can see much closer on my example)

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
String lock is standard issue at the time.
Piece missing from headstock tip ?

...and thanks everyone for playing, we have ourselves a winner!!!
I knew you had it Damian before I checked the replies. Looks virtually identical to the repair Dan did on his which I now own.
Like I said, unmolested (and unmodified).... HA

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
Your observation on the stringlock is intriguing however Damian.
I checked all 3 Pantera models here and only the x390 has that single clamp affair on it. Both the x275's have a 3-clamp lock above the nut exactly the same as the Genesis I models we have. The outer clamps are the "triangle" shape and the middle one being rectangular.
Perhaps a variation within the build specs or...?

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
okay boys and girls, more fun with panteras....
looks we get to start bidding all over again.
listing was ended early "due to listing error"
so now is back on again and looks like it ends at same time as before tho?
and right now, no bids and $50 starting bid
i would bet the reserve has been lowered ...... :flower:
as an extra note, nothing in the text of the listing or pictures has changed, it still says "unmolested" and "Matsumoko" .......

just got a note from the seller.....
Dear gittarasaurus,
Yeah, some nitwit scratched 5150 into the fretboard. It wasn't deep at all, mainly just on the surface, so it came off with a light sanding a little filler. It's been fixed since the pictures were taken. Thanks.
- supercent
i begin to wonder about the definition of "molested"

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
Well Mike, I have been having a heart to heart with the seller as well. All I can say is that for what his listing sounds to be, he told me he is no Westone expert. But I did not realize you needed to be an expert in Westone to know the diff between molested, unmolested, original, unmodified, yadda-yadda-yadda...
If you check all the cancelled bids someone who put $275 on it originally is the currect high bidder now. He probably is going to run out the initial auction to avoid relisting fees as he is responsible for the uncertainties in the auction description.
His replies to me so far are fairly terse, sullen and snippy. I get the feeling that between you and I we have poured cold water down his boots. He told me that if... IF the headstock was repaired he would need to research it to verify I am correct in that. I sent him a link from our very archives to show him both the headstock and nut lock I have seen on every X275 I have ever seen...
http://www.westoneguitars.net/guitars/pantera-series/pantera-standard-x275/ (Look close and you will see something else missing on his "original & unmolested example", unless his didn't come with one. If it did then there will be a pair of screwholes, repaired or visible, on the back of his)
The nutlock on his does match the catalog scan, but it is the first one (in more than 2 dozen or so) of the x275 & x300 Panteras I have looked into.
What about yours John?

well, sorry for him about the free market, but it is listed as un molested when obviously it is not.
honestly, none of the flaws would keep me from wanting to own this guitar, it looks great and we all know what they play like. the major obstacle is just what looks to be a bit high of a reserve price, for what the guitar is worth to me.
no malice intended toward the seller from me, i am just insatiably curious about all the seemingly endless variations on westone guitars.
i'm still watching .......

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
Steve, I noticed the catalogue scan as well, but I've never seen a stringlock like that on any Westone that wasn't an aftermarket addition, probably because the OEM one stripped out!!
My X300 has the normal BD lock....

Funny how this string lock keeps appearing.

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
I could not agree more Damian. As I stated earlier my wife's x390 has a similar style single clamp nutlock as well. There is no doubt anymore in my mind that did come as stock on some of the bolt-on Pantera models as well.
More or less a curiosity to me of why the differing hardware. Mats has been proven across the brand models for switching up stock items on the builds. You would think that for their own "house" label they would have most everything standardized in production but apparently not.

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
The 390 is a Kahler item if a Kahler trem is fitted.
Westone own Bendmaster string lock is a pee poor design which usually either strips it's thread or you loose the shims.
They probably realized this as well and went for a more robust design.

Yes that makes perfect sense as well. And I know all too well how easily those base plates can strip out without taking care when tightening them.
Re: Cherry Pantera X275
Change your string gauge from 10's to 11's or even 12's and they strip themselves.
Re: Cherry Pantera X275
privates! If the requisite care is taken, they're fine; I currently have 11s on mine with no ill effects!! I think the design is fine but the materials used in that stringlock are appalling - to have steel bolts going into an aluminium or soft alloy thread is a recipe for disaster if you're in the least ham handed, eh!!
The poor design thing could be thrown at the E/A bolt though, because if you do put heavy strings on, then there's an awful lot less bolt to grip the thread and Steve777 and I came up with the "use a bolt that's about 2mm longer in that position" solution and it certainly works for me.
I must be alone in liking the BD; though I have to say that I haven't had a lot to do with other locking trems.... Just a fiddle or two with Floyds; never even seen a Kahler though they look over built to buggery... No bad thing when it comes to guitar players!!!!

Re: Cherry Pantera X275
Exactly, that's why you see so many guitars for sale with the E/A lock missing.
