New Melody Maker joins my other one.
I have been selling off some stuff with a view to getting a Les Paul Jnr, to augment my Melody Maker as a lighter weight gigging guitar.
Been seeing Jnrs come and go, definately wanted a P90 singlecut guitar, and then this one came up via an alternative listing site.
Did some haggling, and eventually got this for just over £200 delivered.
Gibson Les Paul Jnr Melody Maker.
Only made for a few years, this one is a 2007.
Great Gibby P90, lovely neck, which while not a baseball bat like the Melody Maker Reissue I also own, but still has a bit of heft.
Basicly 95% of a Les Paul Junior for about 1/3 of the price.
The tunomatic bridge mellows things out a bit compared to the ReIssue with its wraparound, but not by much.
And like my other Melody Maker, the pickup and controls are incredibly responsive. The tone and volume work so effectively, you can dial in a big spread of tones from those single pickups on these.
Heres both of them in some rare recent sunshine

Love them!! - They are simple little lumps of wood but I agree with the tonal response comment.

Re: New Melody Maker joins my other one.
Yup, great little guitars! But with a bewildering array of variations.
We got two of the current reissues into the shop recently, one black, one white. Not the prettiest finishes I've ever seen, and only a single volume knob. But after I set them up with outrageously low action the white one sold almost right away (damn, I had my eye on that one too )
The new reissues have the wrap around "badass" bridge which really ups the sustain, and the pickup is a hot-as-Hades ceramic magnet thing with enough output to jump start yer automobile. Pity it isn't a genuine P90, but it plays great, and has a list price of CAD$499. Not bad for a guitar with Gibson on the headstock.

I've fancied one like the one that Joan Jett used to favour since forever; never seen one that I could afford without selling a kidney, but I love the ballsiness of the tone, eh; just wicked!!

Re: New Melody Maker joins my other one.
I used to own a couple of these and I checked the pickups on my multimeter and from memory, they were pretty low impedence. I wonder if the balls is due to Henry's rather than Ohm's which would be, I think, the influence of the magnets over the windings.
I know what Barry is saying about the finish. It is Gibson's marketing expertise to dress up cheap as vintage. On one of mine, the fingerboard did not even match the neck and there was a pretty discernable ridge on either side of the neck. There is no excuse for that considering the retail price.
Very, very resonant little guitars, however and pretty featherweight too.

Absolutely! Plays great acoustically. I should add that they also released an SG version with the same configuration; didn't care too much for it though. But then, I don't care much for the SG model anyway.hoax wrote:...Very, very resonant little guitars, however and pretty featherweight too.

Re: New Melody Maker joins my other one.
Put a nice LP Jnr pickguard on it yesterday.
Think it looks better dressed with it.
95% of a Junior for 1/3 orf the price

Wouldn't have thought to do that, fits very nicely!
It does spiff it up a bit eh?

As we say sometimes Nice Pair .. .. I mean the guitars that is. ..... Those are very responsive guitars and they resonate the sound very well.

Re: New Melody Maker joins my other one.
Hey Sollo
You got me in the mood for one of those again. So I bought a TV yellow P90 tonight and, like you I stuck on a Les Paul Junior scratch plate I had in my spares box.
It has one non matching machine head. Does anyone have a spare Gibson/Kluson/Wilkinson deluxe style tuner kicking around (treble side)?

Re: New Melody Maker joins my other one.
That's a nice one Hoax, TV yellow ones are nice. I missed out on one of those for a good price, then I saw my red one at an even sweeter one.
Lots of folk on other forums dismiss QC on the lower end Gibsons, but that is not my experience I can tell you
The LP pickguards seem to suit them IMO
Great guitars these.
I'm now looking out for a sunburst MM, I think they look awesome.

Re: New Melody Maker joins my other one.
Oooooh Graham...that's so close to what I've been lusting after for ages!!
The only things missing form my wish list, are a tortoise shell pick guard, a badass bridge, and a single volume pot ("We don need no steenkin' tone control!"). Just a great little axe!

Yup Barry - I get exactly what you are saying. If it didn't already have tune-o-matic/stop piece arrangement I would go for a badass. But when I come across a scrap piece of tortoise shell, I will make a new plate for it.

Just picked another project.
Half stripped mahogany affair.
£80, which is about 2 dollars.
Watch and see!

Re: New Melody Maker joins my other one.
Loving the single cuts guys...
Sollophonic's Melody Maker looks better with Les paul plate on for sure..
Hoax's TV Yellow jr is just how it should be though is the full tuneamatic better or does it take anything away from the tone ???
Either way i love both of them...
Though Hoax's TV Yellow one does it for me... As long as he Doesn't get me executed again..
Though i'm loving my Burny Double cut with a very very wide grin...
