Ibanez Artist 30 1981 super 70s

I have the opportunity to buy this guitar locally. He wants $380 and it comes with OHSC (lovely lime green velour interior).

It is all original and is in pretty good condition - some bumps and bruises but it's all there and totally playable. The only non-original parts, according to the seller, are the output jack and one of the bridge posts which was ordered through Ibanez from Japan.

Original Super 70s pickups are included.

It's black and has a set neck.

Thoughts?

If I did not want to keep it, what would be an estimate of the resale price?

I've not seen many I-Been-Had's that turn my crank, most are utter rubbish.
The brand has a rep that is mysteriously far beyond it's ability to deliver, and seems to appeal mostly to young metal head bangers.
See these guys every week in the shop, mostly with problems for me to repair.

Ouch, i completely disagree Barry. I own a 77 Musician and also an 81 Artist and they are incredible guitars. Ibanez made very high quality guitars back then and i believe they are as good as any Matt guitars. Sure they made lots of crap during the metal years and they do now but vintage Ibanez guitars are A+.
Go for it Colt, thats a great price! You won't regret it and they usually go for more so you could make your money back but i have a feeling you'll keep it. I like the super 70's alot also, nice pickups.

i would also vouch for the old Ibanez stuff. Go get em Colt.

Big difference between modern Ibanez and 70s/early 80s Ibanez. The old ones are definitely good instruments (MIJ, quality comparable to Uncle Mat if I understand correctly) while the more recent stuff is indeed mostly junk. Unfortunately I've not played one myself, but I have heard some old Ibbies and they have a lot more soul to them than the shredders they put out now.

I would vote to go for it, but have no idea of resale value.

Yeah, gotta say I had an old 2388 for a while wa-a-a-y back and it was OK, just very heavy which is why it got the Spanish Archer. I can see where Barry's coming from though with guys like Satch, Vai and Gilbert playing and endorsing them, there is an appeal there to the youngsters in all of us!! Regardless of the fact that their guitars will be heavily modified for their preferences....

Many vintage Ibanez guitars are superb quality. I had an Artist which I bought new in 1977. I don't remember the ID number but it was an Artist Professional in natural. double cutaway, with German top route. It was from the Bob Weir Series. I have seen them go for £800/£1000 in the UK.

You have to check out THIS cool little site. Look through the catalogues from the mid 70's to early 80's, some of their old high end models are stunning IMHO

The pups read approx. 8.6 ohm. and read 'patent applied for'.... lol.

Yup they are gorgeous! I actually own one of those as well to go with my Musician guitar. The neck thru couple! I went thru an Ibanez faze a few years ago, i paid about $700 for the bass and guitar (seperate but locally on craigslist). Incredible instruments!

My nephew in NZ who is a bassist, bought an old Ibanez bass off a drummer friend of mine and then joined a band I put together about 10 years later and still used the old Ibanez! A very light bass from memory but punchy as all hell - great sound!

The older Ibanez models are of superior quality same as the Uncle Matt models. Those pickups are indeed hot pickups, lots of volume and tone. Any set neck ibanez from that time period should be a solid player and the price is not bad.

Very interesting to see those pickups in an old Ibanez Westbone, these are in my Hondo II Pro which i have no idea where it was made. An Ibanez - Hondo connection perhaps?

This is a thread about my "Raven" bass. Raven was distributed by "Great West" here in Canada, beginning in the late 60's. They were made in the same factory as the Ibanez 2366. For all intents and purposes this instrument is an Ibanez 2366 ca. 1970.

No, mate - everyone has a preference, and at least you've got a Prestige and are able to make the comparison! Many here wish they were in such a position!!

I know I'm in a very enviable posistion and the westie holds a special place in my heart as its the guitar I learnt to play on
for the record the next guitar I'm after is a 70's/early 80's Yamaha SG so I can have a sort of Japanese LP Killer collection, not that I'll have the money for the next 18 years - no one told me babies cost so much

Prestige 250's are really uncommon between Thunder Bay and Saskatoon. Wish I could get my mitts on one.... <sigh>

I recently bought a set neck 1978 Yam SBG 200 for less than $200.... the seller never played it! He was making his own amp and needed cash.

I have been looking for years, but CANNOT find a Prestige 250 locally here in the Great White.

Too bad you live across the pond bowenjaybee, there is one for sale locally for about $500 but i think he'd go down a little. High end model like the one pictured above, those models are worth 5 bills for sure. I've almost considered buying it and selling my other Musician bass.

Sweet looking RS1000 you have there caucajun. I've got this, the stripped down body of it's brother, the RS1300.



It's yet another ill thought out project I got off Fleabay a few years ago. I found a neck for it (from an RS440) but the bridge is the big problem. It should have the PRO ROCK'R trem but they stopped making in '86 and now they're rare as rocking horse poop.

Typical of Japanese guitar makers, the trem is completely oddball and the post spacing doesn't seen to match a single damn thing on the market today. And I thought Westone hardware was a pain in the ass.....
