Help to identify this Thunder bass? Pic heavy!
Finally got around to paying of the last of this at Skag Convertors and brought it home this afternoon. 140 sheets, not to bad I think. Problem is I can't find any info about this on the actual Westone site. Maybe I am being dense. It says Thunder I on the headstock but non of the models listed on there have this pick up formation and the pick up toggle switch. The serial number (2010949) leads me to believe its a 1982 model. Am I right?

Welcome here; this may well be a case of " specifications may change without notice"; something Matsumoku were quite adept at!! Thorn may be able to narrow it down a bit, but yeah, 82 looks about right, and in nice condition, too... you got a good 'un there, I reckon!!

Yeah it was one of those "can't miss" sales. Other than a few little dents on the body and a missing volume knob its in good condition. Real nice weight to it. I understand the love for these basses now.
Re: Help to identify this Thunder bass? Pic heavy!
That got me thinking..I remember one on ebay last month like that...is it the same one?
ebay link
surely the bridge pickup is a modification, any close up pics?

I think that is it. I bought this from Blackburn Skag Convertors. Its also missing the volume knob in the picture. I can pretty safely say. And its Skag Convertors selling the item. Obviously didn't sell. Cheers for that Bowenjaybee.
Re: Help to identify this Thunder bass? Pic heavy!
I'm a Thunder bass nut! If yours is modified from what i can see it looks like a good job....bet it sounds great...I'd love to see what's going on in the control cavity. Does the split pickup have allen-key adjustable pole pieces?
the serial # on yours (2010949) is pretty close to my Thunder 1 bass which i believe makes it Jan '82
a great find ... I've been looking in local skag converters and crack generators for the past year and have only come across one Westone, a spectrum series II bass, I bought it but have now sold it..it wasn't really my cuppa.

Looks to be in good nick, nice find.
It looks like my 1982 Thunder I bass except for the pickup near the bridge and the p/up selector switch. But if it has been modded it looks like a tidy job.

Yeah, the bridge pick up is certainly a mod. The fittings are completely different to the standard one. Can't see any other alterations. Played it through my little combo at home and the pick up configuration really gives it a growl. The test comes on Monday when I get to put it through the live rig at practise. Will get some more pictures up when I get home.

That looks pretty good, probably sounds the dogs bollox.
Currently doing one for a customer. P bass body, with added jazz pup(same as yours) and jazz neck. 2 volumes and a tone control.
Bet you can't wait to try it out, properly.

Yep, its agonizing having to wait till Monday.
Re: Help to identify this Thunder bass? Pic heavy!
Here's some more pics of the beast. Sounds and plays fine, just needs a clean up as you can probally spot from these picks. Plus a new volume knob. How easy is it to get original Westone ones?

Re: Help to identify this Thunder bass? Pic heavy!
Finally got it playing through the live rig. Really impressed. Such a big sound, I didn't even have to use my eq pedal once. The bridge pickup really helps and being able to swap between settings was an advantage. It's a big rock monster.
Still need some new control knobs. If I can't get hold of original ones anyone got any recomendations for similar looking ones?

Not exact but very close.

One of the forum members knocked up a few and I believe they were very good indeed, and Spares had some made a couple of years ago as well; all of the stock went very quickly so there's quite a few bods out there short of these OEM knobs. Here's the thread for Wayne Weedon...
http://forum.westoneguitars.net/wanted-f4/desperately-looking-for-two-brass-monkeys-t45.htm#1476
... but he hasn't been seen on here for a year or two! Still, could be worth a PM, eh??
I believe our tame Viking offered to make some as well... oh no, wait - they were Swtchmasters, but you could ask him what's involved with making your own??
http://forum.westoneguitars.net/technical-f3/switchmaster-knobs-t828.htm#6716
But otherwise, I'm sorry, mate - they just are orphans and you've gotta keep watching eBay!!

Cheers for the links gang. Gonna have a gander and get on the case next week. Hopefully try and get something sorted, I want it road ready for December.
Re: Help to identify this Thunder bass? Pic heavy!
Yeah, they're not bad basses are they.
As a stop gap these dont look to bad, a bit shiney at first but soon dull.

I'm still around Corsair! Yes but true I'd not popped in here for quite a while. I'm still a Westone man though, just the last couple years been tough in my game so guitars became less important.
BUT I am thinking of making another batch of the thunder knobs, not sure how soon though. I'v also drawn up the thunder Jet style knobs

Re: Help to identify this Thunder bass? Pic heavy!
Well if you ever get chance to make those Thunder knobs then you most certainly have a customer here fella. Betting quite a few other folk would be after some as well.
P.S. I like your avatar as well. Stay slack.

We iz all Devo!
I think I made a batch of about 40 of the brass knobs originally. Zube (Where is he now?!) had a few sets, and one set which were chrome plated.
Polly had some and the rest were ebayed. I do recall one guy in the USA cleared me right out in the end.
I still got the broach etc here, so it wouldnt be too much bother once I get my arse out of the other work for a day or so.

I got knobbed by Wayne, good too.
Zube was trying to move house and selling off a lot of his awesome guitar collection to fund it (I had 2), wouldnt sell me one of his 250s tho.
