Hi All!!!

I'm new to the world of Westone guitars but I'm hoping to find some help.  I was given a basket-case Westone that I believe to be a Corsair XA1440, Sept. '87 manufacture.  So if my homework is correct, it's Korean.  I'm a bass player by trade but have been picking around on the guitar for the last few years on the side and have just got the hankering to put this thing back together.  I have access to a great painter and haven't decided on what color to go back with yet.  Look forward to learning a few things from y'all.

Hi All,

I'm Andrew from Baltimore!  In 1986 I bought a used Shergold Marathon 4 string bass (stereo pick up with one jack input) and I would love to know its real age.  Unlike most photos I have seen of the Marathon the serial number is on the back of the body, not the back of the neck.  The number is 6288.  Thanks for any input!  I looked on the official website but they don't have marathon records so it will need a bit of detective work.  Cheers!

Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of two Westones (alongside my fairly substantial collection of Washburns), and I *love* them.

I picked up a Thunder 1 a few years ago here in the UK, and got it for a bargain price due to its poor cosmetic condition. What the owner didn't seem to appreciate was that despite its condition it still played like a dream Very Happy It's now one my go-to guitars.

I also just bought an '87 Spectrum DX which is in poor cosmetic condition too, so I'll likely be researching and enquiring about this one over the coming months as I try to bring it back up to a good state of repair.

Thanks for all the great info the website and forums host - I've been coming here for a while but am only just getting round to registering now.

I attach a pic of my beloved Thunder 1 along with a couple of my other guitars.

Hello Andrew. You do realize that this is a Westone (Matsumoku, Japan) site eh? Unless one of the members here knows something about this brand, we have no information on Shergold which was a British manufactured instrument.

Hello W&W and welcome.
Glad to hear you're a fan of our site and the the Thunder, they kick arse! And the Spectrum series has one of the best commercially made necks of all time IMHO so you're going to love it too. Lots of us have have restored and repaired them both so there's a lot of help when you're ready.

Please start a new thread in the Member's Forum when you're ready to work on the Spectrum so we can have a look at it.

Thanks Barry for the warm welcome.

I've had a good luck at the Spectrum and it's looking like it's going to be a full restoration job, so I'll be needing as much help as I can get!

I've got my fingers crossed that under all that thick black paint is a beautiful piece of wood I can form into a *bit* of a Thunder look-a-like... Very Happy

Don't count on it. The Spectrum bodies are constructed of multiple pieces of Maple and the number of pieces can vary considerably from 3 up.

If your intent is to strip the paint to make a "natural Maple" finish you will likely be disappointed. Except for the transparent finishes, you will see a  large variation in grain, some of it not so pretty which is why there is a solid finish on the guitar.

Please start a new thread for this guitar in the Members' Forum so we can discuss it properly. We're off topic here. Wink

Yeah... sorry 'bout that! We were getting spam by the wheelbarrow full, most of which originated from gmail accounts so the site owner just cut that avenue out and "A voila!" ... spam gone!!

Post by Jarek Sun Sep 17, 2017 6:53 am

Hi All!
My name is Jarek, I am from Poland. I'm interested in MIJ guitars, especially from Matsumoku factory - Westone models.
I've been playing guitar for only 1 year, so I'am amateur but still learning Smile. I started to play on made in China Washburn X10 but I was not satisfied of sound so I decided to look for instrument with "soul" and some interesting history. Then I found out about japanese factories and high quality instruments they made. For long time I've been reading about history, models, serial numbers and looking for some attractive offer and I found - white Westone Spectrum ST from 1986 Smile. For all the time very helpful was this forum, it let me know a lot about Westone guitars, so thank you for your help.
Now I'm still looking for some Westone in les paul style but it's not easy Smile.

hi from France,

i join the club with a concord 3, its a lovely guitar with surprinsigly high output!
it doesn't really sound like a strat ( i compared with a traditional strat) but the tone is really expressive and punchy .  The guitar is all stock except the switch and tone/vol control wiche are cts vintage.
Maybe my favorite guitar right now.

if you have some info on this model im more than interested!

Not with Concords, no, but I have Spectrums, a Genesis II, a Pantera X300PP and a Raider II which have excellent build quality - even as a basket case, the Raider came together beautifully! - and playability second to none.
I don't have any of the premium models - X350/390, Prestige or Rainbow - but I do have a Vantage VA900 made in the same factory in 1980 which IS a top of the line model, and it is simply superb in fit and finish. I played that guitar around the traps for 25+ years without a backup guitar and never once did it let me down!!
It's on its' 3rd set of frets which are as low as a snakes dick but that's all that's been changed...
Matsumoku quality from the late 79s to 1986/7 is generally about as good as it gets for a factory built instrument, so enjoy it!!

The X350 & X390 Panteras were indeed, high class instruments with set necks and top drawer hardware; the X300 & X275 were bolt necks and made in much higher numbers.

I think the Concords pre-dated the Spectrums - there are a few Spectrum shaped instruments around marked as Concord on the headstock!!

Post by Westtwo Sat Nov 18, 2017 7:59 am

Hello everybody,

I already posted on something in another post, but then I saw that there was a place to post a real introduction, so let's make it official.
It all started for me with my first electric guitar in the mid-eighties, which was a nice second-hand Aria Pro II RS-X70. After a few years I crossed over to playing the bass. Then life happened and playing guitar really got to the background. Fast forward to the beginning of this year when I started looking for a bass to start playing again. I picked up a beaten up, unloved Aria Pro II SB Special II on the internet. Restoring it I realized that I loved what I was doing and started looking for more guitars and more information about them. This site and the Matsumoko site have been invaluable sources of information, so my thanks for providing that information.Say hello... - Page 20 Img_2014
After that, things have gotten a little out of hand. I currently own about 35 Matsumoku guitars and basses. These include Aria, Aria Pro II, Vantage, Quest, Washburn and of course Westone.
In the future I hope to use your knowledge and wisdom, because I still have a lot of guitars to bring back to their former glory.

The photos I've added are from my favorite Westone and  the other one, I really like because it is oozing Eighties out of every pore. It shares its photo with a Quest Atak 5 I picked up at a convention. That Westone currently on loan to my nephew (who is a better guitar player than I'll ever be), whom I'm trying to infect with the Matsumoko bug. I already gave him a Vantage AV-315, so who knows what will happen.

A great line up of models Rob.

Once you get the Mats bug it's near impossible to shake it! (I'm looking at myself in the mirror and a certain transplanted Kiwi here Razz )

On any given day we have many unregistered guests browsing the forums here and the web site. But it's a real treat when they register and join in.

And thanks for the compliments! The members here are the best bunch of folks you could ask for. They're the ones who contribute to make it the great resource it is.

Post by Goldengirl Sun Dec 31, 2017 11:36 am

Have just acquired my first Westone! A lovely Thunder 1A bass, built in 1984, the guitar I wish I had bought back then ...and now, 33 years later am the proud owner of this delightful bass!😊
I also own a MIM Fender Jazz and an OLP (MusicMan copy by Ernie Ball) and the Westone easily holds it's own! Have played the Thunder at church this morning for the first time and it sounded fantastic and attracted a lot of admiration

Hi Goldengirl and welcome!
I'm happy to hear you've got the bass you always wanted. The Thunder line is tough and terrific, and just one of the many fine models produced by Westone's Matsumoku craftsmen.

We'd love to see some pix when you're able to post Smile

Hi all. I don't seem to be able to access my old account, which was under the namenof KevH i think, so have rejoined. From Chorley in Lancashire. Good to be back, haven't had time to catch up yet on loads of stuff, but I'll work my way through it. Still mainly owning Thunders, but got my first big purchase Westone recently, and now have a Prestige 250, the model I've wanted most in the collection now. Though we all know how it works. I need a Rainbow now, then I'll be lusting after a Paduak. Anyway hi to all members, and it's great to see the place is still going, and i will help out where I can.

Hi all -

Just to introduce myself!

Name - Jon

Age - Ancient

Location - Near Bedford

Westone - Thunder II Bass (It's the active model, so technically a Thunder II-A I think?)

Musical style/favourite bands - Well. I started out in (and bought the bass for playing in) a punk band very early 80's - I cant remember what I played bass-wise before I bought the Westone. So the obvious influences from then (Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks) and odd bods from before that (Gong, Beefheart, Can, VDGG, Soft Machine). Afterwards - a bit of everything (HMHB, Laurie Anderson, Young Knives, Eels, TMBG, dub/reggae, old Motown/Stax, classic rock etc etc etc!!!)

Since that band folded mid eighties, I haven't really played the bass much but have now been asked to join a local band doing just that (as well as some singing and ukulele playing - but not all at the same time) doing covers of rock classics. So I have dug the old Westone out, given it a polish and some new strings (EB Super Slinkys) and am now enjoying it again. It's in very decent condition!

Other instruments - Parker Nitefly (and a couple of other guitars), Pete Howlett Ukuleles (and a few cheap ones), Mike Gilpin HurdyGurdy, melodeons by Hohner, Castagnari and Streb.

Favourite instrument - In truth it's probably my Hohner Erica melodeon, but every instrument is always a joy to play - I just love music!

Picture of the Thunder II bass now in the Members' Westones section of the forum!

All the best and nice to be here,

Jon

Hi Jon and welcome! Sounds like you're having musical fun again. And great to hear the Westone's back in action.

The Nightfly is an extraordinary instrument eh? Peter Parker had a guitar vision that wasn't always shared by a lot of folks. But those who get it truly dig them. I have the PM20 import. Not in the same class but also a wonderful player.

Post by Gankthis Sun May 20, 2018 6:14 pm

Hello Everyone,

I stumbled upon this forum after looking up the bass I just acquired. Seems like fate to me!❤️

Introducing myself

Name - Patrick

Nickname - Gankthis

Age - Old enough to know better 😉

Location - Arizona 🔥

1st Bass - Westone Genesis 1987 anniversary (I Think xa6520)🎶🎵

Favorite Bass - My 1st and only (see above)

Music Styles - I listen to a little of everything and would like to play rock, r&b, blues, funk, metal etc etc

I decided to start learning bass a few weeks back. After borrowing my buddy’s acoustic electric I figured I should find a used bass and continue my experience. So after LOTS of reading and research, including multiple visits to pawn shops, guitar center etc I stumbled upon the Westone bass, a 25’ cable and a Kustom kxb20 amp. I walked away with both for $235. I hope I did well on my 1st purchase alone.

Now that I have my set up I am ready to learn and practice.
It has a beautiful red cherry color and a 1/4” sanded out area for slapping. My buddy said it has a P/humbucker pick ups.

After the waiting period I will upload some pictures. I can’t wait to show you guys this bass.

Nice one, Patrick!! That carve under the strings is CNC'd into it; all of the Genesis models have it and I think it was just to show that they could!! I know I've never been tempted to slap or pop on my Genesis II.... though it's a 6 string!!

Hi every one im Mike username mikemycroft. I have a Westone Thunder 2 my one and only guitar for the last 37 years! I havent played it enough so its still in prety good condition, a bit scratched up but still play nice. It would be nice to compare it to something else, but i never saw the point of buying things that just sit and dont get used. The guitar needs 3 controls knobs somif anyone can poijnt me in the right direction id appreciate it.
And if anyone else bought a Westone from Hudons Music in Matlock in 1981,snap!

Hi Mike and welcome.
The brass knobs on the Thunder, like many things Westone, were proprietary designs. You'll not find a direct off the shelf replacement.

There is a slight chance that one of the members here has spares to offer.
Failing that, we have sourced a supplier who has made a replica brass knob. They are pretty close to the original however the knurling is much coarser and would not have the same feel. The LINK is on our website, scroll down.

Hello everyone!

I bought a Spectrum LX new in the later 80's. Beautiful deep blue. I still have it but play it sparingly, which I will get into in a moment.

I am glad I found this forum! I have some questions as well as a small missing part! But I will go into that in the appropriate area.

The scribble you see by the bridge is from the late great Bugs Henderson. If that name means nothing to you, Google him. ;-)

The only thing I've done is replace the bridge pickup with a Pearly Gate. That would have been in the early 90's.

Hi there, and welcome! I do like me a Spectrum...

... what are you missing? One of the stringlock clamps is AWOL in your pic, and it looks like the wang bar collar on the bridge plate is also gone.

The clamps can obtained by PMing Sgt Vimes but the collar is a whole other story as it is a piece peculiar to Westone and thus, no longer available.
However.

Our own Westbone has a very elegant fix for just this problem involving modifying a FR bar; I have two of these on my guitars and they work wonderfully well!

So, how does the Pearly Gates sound? Is it balanced with the other pickups?

The wang bar is in the case (I rarely use a bar).

I figured I might be able to get a friend of mine to make modelled after the other side, just the obverse. I'd rather not make a wholesale change to the nut arrangement.

The pearly gate sounds great! Until you pull up the back knob, any way. :-D.

And I'll try contact Sgt. Vines soon, thanks!

Hey Syd, nice to have you with us!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Spectrums are da bomb! (I have 7 of 'em so I may be a tad prejudiced). They have a playing comfort level that's hard to beat, and so many variations!

Some pictures of your guitar would be helpful to offer suggestions about your wiring issues. Please start a new thread in the Technical or Member's forum. Meantime, here is the wiring diagram for the DX
