Pestige restore question Empty Pestige restore question

Post by diddydave Thu Oct 22, 2009 8:10 am

hi all
i have a bit of a dilemma, I have had my prestige 250 for many years now but it has been messed with.
it has non original pups in it and the wiring is a conventional LP style, As it stands it is very close sounding to my LP and i love it as is but i have a nagging in the back of my head to restore the PEQ circuit with the variable coil tap as in theory i like the idea of this circuit.

should I:
A) leave well alone as it rocks as is
B) rewire with existing pups (only two conductors on the pups) for 4 conductors and restore PEQ Circuit
C) Replace with nice (possibly Bare Knuckle) pups and restore PEQ
D) source some original pups and restore it completely back to spec

Do any of you have a PEQ guitar and how dos it sound, does it rock as i think it would? Smile

I agree that the PEQ tone circuit sounds like a good idea. But in practice it's not really all that usable.

I had a Prestige 150 (sold it) and still have a Rainbow II, both with this circuit. I normally leave the tone controls in the center detent position, so I don't use the PEQ. The Rainbow II sounds good in all 3 pickup positions without tweaking the tone.

If you are happy with the sound of your Prestige 250 then leave it alone. If you really want to try to restore the circuit the go ahead. It's your choice. If you don't have the original pickups then restoring the PEQ circuit won't really help the collector's value of the guitar that much.

I agree; it's a non-OEM guitar so go nuts and see if you like it - you can always put it back to the way it is now, eh!! Pestige restore question Icon_biggrin My Vantage has the same sort of deal but after about 1982 I never bothered with it and, as Colt says, left it in the detent possie and got any tweaking done outboard... I think they - PEQ circuits - are a great idea that don't really cut it in the real world of guitar playing onstage.
