Pickup replacement for a Dimension IV Guitar
I acquired a dimension IV Last year in red, The previous owner, for whatever reason decided to rip the original pickup out and replace it with a chapman pickup (I still have the original but it looks pretty beat up and rusty, hence why it was probably replaced). The choice of pickup boggles my mind, probably a leftover from their chapman mod, whilst it sounds absolutely fine as is, Further down the line I'd like to replace it with something by Dimarzio or Seymour Duncan.
Does anyone know what sort of pickup goes best with this guitar? I was considering a Dimarzio X2n or a Seymour Duncan JB.
I only want to replace the bridge pickup.
Also, with the tone controls, does that affect how I'll have to wire the pickup?

Re: Pickup replacement for a Dimension IV Guitar
Hello Bnej and welcome here.
Your guitar originally came with "UBC" (unbalanced coil) humbuckers LINK.
Also see our website LINK for a bit more information on your guitar.
The UBC's are considered by most of us to be sub-standard and "wimpy" sounding compared with the more desirable MMK45's which were standard on the earlier Westone models. So I'm not surprised that the original owner took it out.
If you know how to check the Ohm reading on a pickup you can check your original to see what it is exactly. The UBC's clock in at about 6k full and 3K split. The MMK45's by comparison are around 11-15k, quite a difference.
As for a replacement, it's completely up to you. No changes to wiring is necessary, it's a straight replacement and everything should work as expected.

I have to recommend Iron Gear pickups.

In my experience the Rolling Mill Overwound is a pretty good *sonic* match for the MMK45 in a Raider 1 (which was notably hotter than the pickup in my Spectrum 3), but they do other pickups which are a better visual match if that's what you are after. I'm not going to risk starting a fire by saying it has a depth and clarity that the revered MMK45 lacked, you'd have to make your own mind up about that.
I'm not associated with Iron Gear in any way, but am really impressed by the quality of their product regardless of cost. I just wish they made a single coil with hex polepieces.

No worries.noparadise wrote:...I'm not going to risk starting a fire by saying it has a depth and clarity that the revered MMK45 lacked. ..
The 45's were great for many tones but they could never be accused of being "clarity" monsters.
Many members find them to be a bit on the "muddy" side. All depends on what music genre you're in to.
