Thunder 1A wiring
Afternoon, all
I have finally got round to tackling the wiring on my thunder 1a that I bought years ago and has never worked.
I won an auction for new switches recently but, unfortunately, one of the switches is incorrect (I think it’s the active switch). It’s the blue one with 8 poles on the photos. It says Japan on the side but no obvious other numbers. Having had a look around both google and this site I cannot seem to track down a replacement.
Any ideas? All help gratefully received.

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
What you need is a 4PDT on/on flat toggle mini switch.
You have 12 poles not 8.
Here's a link .......LINK
They'er out there somewhere.
Lockdown here in the UK is causing a few problems getting hold of stuff at the mo.

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
Just two be clear, that is a 4 pole / double throw switch (4PDT), with 12 lugs (not poles)

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
Thanks for the advice. You will be pleased to hear I bottled out of soldering it and took it to a Guitar tech who had it sorted in about 20 mins. Appears whoever wired it previously was colour blind.
Anyway, it all works now and I had no idea it was so versatile.
Now to find a brass knob.
Cheers

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
Can I ask, is this switch suitable for all 3 switches?

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
No, only the phase. The other two have six lugs

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
Bumping this thread because I received my lefty Westone Thunder 1A that's replacing my other 1A that was stolen almost a decade ago, and it needs a lot of work. Someone replaced all of the switches at some point, but luckily it still has the original brass knobs.
Does anyone have a link to the non-active, 6 lug flat toggle switches? Also, what about the pickup selector switch up top? Trying to get this baby back to as close to what it was!

Good luck!
Sorry, you said 6 lug. I have at least one that you can have.

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
I think I might've found one - would this work? https://www.parts-express.com/parts-express-dpdt-mini-paddle-switch--060-538
If so, then I just need to find a pickup toggle switch and I'll be in business.

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
It looks like CPC might not be shipping stateside right now, but I did manage to find this 4PDT switch available here:
NTE SWITCH TOGGLE MINIATURE FLAT HANDLE 4PDT 6A 125VAC ON-NONE-(ON) EPOXY SEALED SOLDER LUG TERMINALS PART-NUMBER 54-347
The DPDT switch from that same line:
NTE SWITCH TOGGLE MINIATURE FLAT HANDLE DPDT 6A 125VAC ON-NONE-ON EPOXY SEALED SOLDER LUG TERMINALS PART-NUMBER 54-333
Do these look correct? Both are ON-NONE-ON (but they have an ON-OFF-ON for the DPDT if I need that instead), however they are rated for 6A 125V instead of 5A 120V, so I want to make sure before I pick these up.
Could I also trouble someone to take a picture of their pickup selector switch for me? I'm fairly certain the one on mine is original but painted silver, but I can't recall what my last one looked like, and I don't believe I have enough of a posting history to post a picture yet.
Thank you!

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
So, my pickup selector switch was bent, and in trying to finish straightening it out it snapped, and it looks like it snapped off before and was sneakily super glued back together. I ordered this as a replacement:
Musiclily Box Style Les Paul SG 3 Way Pickup Selector Toggle Switch, Black Tip
My question is do I solder the ground to the solo lug on the side? On the current switch it's just soldered to the side of the box switch (serial number dates it as an '85 according to this site).

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
Solder it anywhere you like.
If your guitar is an '85 model you do not want a 4pdt active switch.
All 3 are dpdt type.

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
Just wanted to pop in and thank this site and everyone here for their help. With the wiring diagrams available on the site, and everyone's input on switches I was able to get mine in my lefty Thunder 1A reverted back to the ol' flat/paddle switches I'm used to with minimal headache (that phase switching mini toggle has like almost a dozen solder points on it, though!) Taking it to the shop here shortly for a final looking over and then it's finally time to play it again!

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
Whatever mate but a 4pdt switch on the phase switch is not needed.
Don't know where you got that idea from?????
Looking at the wrong diagram???
Yours is an '85 model....yes?
Your right mate take it to a technician....

Re: Thunder 1A wiring
No, I used dpdt for all of them after I read and saw that the '85 had all dpdt, I was just initially asking because that's what was recommended initially in the thread so I assumed it might be like that but obviously wasn't. It's all wired up and working fine now thanks to the diagram.
