Possibly the sexiest Gibson SG ever?
I have always had a love hate relationship with SG's.
Long before I discovered Matsumoku in earnest, and became hopelessly infected with GAS, I had but 5 guitars, including my Gibson ES330. And I was reasonably content.
From time to time I had flirted with adding another guitar and I had always assumed an SG would be it, mainly because it's a great rhythm machine and it can also snarl when needed. Lightweight too, always a plus.
But I never had an opportunity to play one until many years later when I was working at the guitar shop, finally!
Never been so disappointed.
Don't get me wrong, the body was comfortable, and the tones were there. . .but that neck! Like stroking a giraffe!!
Although it's still a G scale the perception is it seems to go on forever because of the extra fret access. I just could not get comfortable behind it. And so I let it be.
Until today!
Premier Guitar Magazine just emailed me with a review of the new Gibson SG "Modern".
I think I may be in love. Still broke mind you, but in love.
It's a cross between an SG and an LP. And that flame Maple cap in blueberry finish? Wow! I also dig the change to the coil cut circuit. Very kewl.
Have a look & listen and see if this ain't a lot sexier than Angus Young in short pants:

The question you have to ask, is it authentic?

Huh?
Not sure what you're asking Chris.
It's a Gibson release so it's the real deal LINK
As for how it sounds, you'll have to A-B it with a traditional build and decide fer yerself.

Still the same 'giraffe' neck as you mentioned.
Or are you built like an Orangutan...

Not a "Chibson" then?!
I've always been a bit leery of the SG; don't know why, but I've just never liked them particularly. Strapped on they always felt like a 3/4 guitar to me because I'm not a small bloke...
However... that blue is sublime - really makes the thing stand out!! That said, just about the only Gibson I fancy is a Victory model, or perhaps one of Wayne Charvels' WRCs... they turn my crank!

Not so much anymore. More sag than expansion.

I Like it - A LOT
I had an Epiphone SG with Wood grain matt red finish years ago and loved it
Cant remember why I got rid of it - possibly to fund a Westone purchase

Re: Possibly the sexiest Gibson SG ever?
I was just poking fun at the video Gibson put out recently about "playing authentic".
Personally, I'm on the fence about SGs. I really like the 61-63 Les Paul jr and later SG jr with the same body.
I don't know specifics about them but some SGs just look funny. Certain models I like and certain models I dislike.
If I owned one, it would probably be vintage white with nasty faded gold hardware.

Re: Possibly the sexiest Gibson SG ever?
Yeah I would still prefer a Junior over an SG as well.
But dayum, she sho is purty. (and I like the wiring change on the coil cut too)

LP Junior double cut with P90s.... like that APII that Don has, and I covet! I'd still like a Victory, though...
Actually something with robot tuners would keep me amused for hours and hours, eh....

More like, you'd be spending your time trying to keep the neck up, they add an unbelievable amount of weight to the head!corsair wrote:...Actually something with robot tuners would keep me amused for hours and hours, eh....
Fiddled about with one on an LP at the shop once. Interesting idea but it was just so wrong.
