I have 8 NOS Active circuit boards for sale, open to offers and will post.these came from FCN the UK distributors for Westone when they shut down a few years ago, forgot I had them!! they are new and unused thunder - NOS Thunder 1A Active Circuit Boards 20160510

So do the active eq and gain use the same circuit and it's just the pots that change the circuits behavior?

Wow, super duper, just when you think you've seen just about everything Westone! Christmas comes early. Very Happy

Now, a request...can someone who buys one of these and is savvy in solid state electronics, document this thing so we can update our archive info going forward? A proper schematic would be great but at least detailed photos + a record of the component markings? The value of caps etc would be extremely helpful to those attempting a repair or build from scratch.

Barry I wouldn't know where to start mate, schematics are hard enough to understand never mind creating one!
I can take as many photos as needed however but I'm not sure they'll be of much use Smile

I understand Pete, perhaps I shouldn't use the term "schematic". More like what we have already but in better detail using photos on which we can add labels.

Like Damian said, the values should be either be written on the components or can be determined via the colour bands.

If you can make some detailed photos we should be able to read the values off the photos. Additionally if you can write them down on a rough positional sketch I think we'd have everything needed for future reference. I or someone else can put it all together for the web site.

My Thunder 1-A which I have had since new (my very first guitar) just had the active die yesterday. Switch works but no sound when active is turned on. I swapped out the batteries which were pretty fresh but as I feared still no sound when the active is on.

Just found this thread last night and a new board should fix the the issue so let me know if someone still has one for sale. I am located in Texas but also have a relatives in the UK if that is easier to ship to.

Damian's had lots more experience than I with these things, and would be a better choice to give it the once over. And he's a heck of a lot closer too so less chance for damage to occur in transit.

I think a proper schematic is a bit much to ask and a lot of work. Ultimately, all most folks would need is a few clear photos with the components identified so they know what they're dealing with.

It should be obvious to see what is connected to what in the the picture since it's a PC board. We have to assume that anyone referring to the information has an idea of what they're doing.

CLARIFICATION NEEDED
I'm assuming the same circuit is used in all active versions of the Thunder but with different hook up? External connection points are unclear in the current Thunder diagrams. I'm not sure how we sort that.

If you could take a bunch of pix and perhaps do a rough version, nothing too fancy, just numbered labels, I can take your draft and transfer the info to a final version if you like. (Just give me clean versions of the pix along with your marked up one).
e.g. "1"---> (points to a resistor on photo) Description of #1 - 220Ω (and/or band colours?) etc...

If you'd rather do a final version that's OK too, as I say, up to you how much time you have. I'm happy to finish it up if that works better for you.

p.s. David Blair did a nice job of explaining one of the circuits HERE I think if we follow the same general approach and build on it with larger pictures, especially the underside, we're good.

Anyone who intends to make one will obviously be able to read all the values.

Much better if you have an uninstalled one for the pix. Then I can certainly reference my own T's for additional clarification.

Geez this is getting way too complicated and I'm not looking for a debate or argument. I just thought you'd be the best person to look at this project. If you don't want to do it, no problem.

When you said you had "lots of boards on hand" I took it to mean you had spares. The point of this exercise is to get unencumbered shots of the board itself, not the board in situ.

This is to be a PC board reference for someone trouble shooting or attempting a new build replacement.

It's not a wiring installation. Background clutter, stray wiring, and dubious lighting is not too helpful when you're trying to understand the board's design.

Two nuts and it's all there and easy to take photos.

Don't complicate things with mentioning wires and the like.

If I find the time I'll take some photos but you have exactly the same as myself. So see no difference.

I know this is a pretty old thread but did any of you guys got to find out all the components values and PCB design/ schematic so tha I can make one circuit from scratch... I have a westone Thunder II bass without the electronics and would like to get it back to the original specs.

The bass circuit is the same for all Thunder basses. There are pcb track and component differences between the bass and first and second guitar boards, they are not interchangeable.

I got this warning when I tried to acces the "zombans" site:

odd, works for me in Firefox. There is no security risk, it's one of my sites and there is literally nothing else on it

aha! Firefox does say not secure here but loads the page, that will happen on any site that doesn't have an SSL certificate. If your security settings in Firefox are high /strict - which is described as 'may cause some sites to break' - that might stop the page from loading, the standard security setting lets you access it. Barry has seen the site so I don't think it's a universal problem.

Firefox updated for me yesterday to version 80.0. I hadn't checked to see if any changes to my security settings were "altered" and they are still at "standard". My tracker block is activated, tho.

Error states that the SSL Certificate is not valid for the site (The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.secure-secure.co.uk, secure-secure.co.uk)

Not sure what to suggest, can't think of anything that would cause that to happen. My Firefox is version 78.2 and up to date, there's no newer version for my OS so I can't try to replicate what you're getting, all I can do is say the site is safe.
If you do manage to get on the site you'll find component lists, layouts and PCB track patterns and more for all the Thunder active circuits

I just checked with Firefox 80 and I am getting the warning now too. It does relate to the certificate which is invalid for this site.

Chrome loaded the site OK but showed an "Insecure" message.

Here's a simple workaround:
Since we know the site is safe just remove the "s" from "https" in the URL and reload the site. Wink

Not sure what Firefox 80 is playing at there since there is no https in www.zombans.co.uk/westone/active/

The certificate isn't just invalid, it doesn't exist and never has.

The latest protocols assume that URLs are connecting via a secure connection (HTTPS) so that prefix is appended automatically to your address unless you specify HTTP. That's how we're able to work around it by dropping the "s".

When the connection is not secured we see these kinds of privacy warnings.
I just checked with Opera and it says:

This server could not prove that it is www.zombans.co.uk; its security certificate is from *.secure-secure.co.uk. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.
NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

David, the problem of security certification is a server side issue and lay with your Internet host provider. You would need to have a chat with them to resolve.

I think personally the protocols are paranoid, can't imagine many personal websites have certificates - none of mine do and my provider only issues them at a cost per site of £49.99 per site. Never mind, this isn't really an appropriate subject for a guitar forum.

No, not available yet but the plan is to copy the info to our website soon.

Meanwhile, I just checked with both Firefox and Chrome again and I had no problem connecting.
