Westone Concord 1s - pickups/modding
Hi, as a recent convert to westone guitars I was wondering if anyone with the Concord 1 has upgraded their guitars. I've got both an 82 and 84 model and while the look and feel is great the pickups feel a bit naff/weak on each. Anyone modded these fine little guitars? There doesn't seem to be a great deal of information on them online.
Thanks

Hello bluenile and welcome.
Yes, the pups in these little babies are frequently swapped out for the reason you mention.
Look at this Google Site Specific Search and you'll get lots of projects, opinions and ideas.

Checking out some Ironstones at the moment... look like some good budget pickups

Ironstone are nice, irongear are better, but check out Oil City Pickups and speak to Ash, he'll go through what you want from a pickup and custom wind it for you, very reasonable prices on extremely nice pickups, top guy too!

Oil city pups are good, just around the corner from me. Helpful fellow indeed but your phone bill might increase dramatically..... likes a good chat.

I have a Concord I and I like the trashy sound of the pickups. Reminds me of 'Dirty Mind' era Prince. Initially I had tuning issues with the guitar going sharp when I bent the strings but this was completely solved by switching the string trees for the roller type. The Concord I is a great guitar.

p.s. another thing is that the pickup height makes a massive difference to the sound of the Concord I. There's a few good videos on Youtube about single coil height adjustment. Essentially you need to set the pickups much lower than you would think so that the strings can vibrate properly. When I got the guitar I was pushing the pickups higher and higher trying to get more volume out of them but there was no sustain and the sound was all weedy so then I went the other way until the pickups were pretty much flush with the scratch plate and it's like a different guitar. Much more sustain and fuller sounding, particularly the neck pickup.

I gave this a try and it's worked a treat! Glad I didn't rush into spending the £££ on pickups now. Love the look of your Concord, did you respray it yourself?BC Witch wrote:p.s. another thing is that the pickup height makes a massive difference to the sound of the Concord I. Re my Concord- it's a standard red finish and I just covered the pick guard in metallic red paper from a craft store and painted around it with a wide metallic gold pen. I also did a similar thing on part of the headstock.

Single coils are a different animal from humbuckers and they do behave differently.

Re: Westone Concord 1s - pickups/modding
Hi again guys, long time since I posted, still rocking my Concord I, using it mostly for gain on the bridge pup as I use a squier classic vibe strat for clean tones. If I didn't want to keep it stock the bridge p up would be straight in the classic vibe as that's pretty nasty as per typical strat Keep looking out for a HSS Concord III but it seems they are extremely rare these days
