What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Got one of these for a good price the other day, a nice red one.
Will be working on it soon, to get it into a more playable state.
Can anyone tell me what pickup was fitted to these as standard, please?
Mine is a single humbucker, dated 1986, and has two toggle switches that switch the two HB coils on or off.
Both coils of the HB have hex pole pieces too.
Will post pics and a new thread soon
Cheers

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Dunno, but if it's a Mats ('86) it could be a MMK45? Give it quick resistance check to see.
If yer gettin' around 7'sh KΩ on one of the coils that would clinch it. A UBC wouldn't likely cut it but you never know, if it's reading 3'sh then you'll know.
Never seen one in the flesh, but they do look interesting.

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Plan on working on this sometime next week, so I'll check that out. Thanks Barry
This one is a red one, has a nasty ding on the lower horn that I need to touch up.
Neck feels nice, has some awful old strings on it, and needs some work
Post pics and let folk know about the pickup soon.
Too many other things to do.....

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
It's not a humbucker but 2 single coils, pretty much akin to the UBC in that it's puny and thin, not a bad try at a tele sound though.
I would have changed mine for a ballsy humbucker if I'd have kept it, which I didn't, coz it was 'orrible.

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Did a bit of work on it earlier this evening, new strings and a good clean up.
I plan on making a new bone nut with widened string spacing
I like the way the guitar plays and feels too.
The pickup is definitely not an MMK 45 though, and I don't think it is an UBC either.
As it plays nicely, I think I will swap out the pickup for something else , and keep the original in case I return it to stock.
I have a nice Squier 51 hum bucket which sounds nice, or I will look out for a used MMK45, though there are some nice reasonably priced hum buckets out there.
Still working on it, pics will follow soon.

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Here's first few pics.
Thinking that this might make a good La Cabronita style guitar.
A Gretsch style pickup might drop in here too.
A work in progress.....

Not so easy finding those in the UK, might have to take a chance on getting them from HKWestbone wrote:With Barry on the Lipsticks. That guitars crying out for them! It's lipstick red!!..

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Might give those a go, though they are in Hong Kong.
They would need a different humbucker ring too, as they have 4 height adjusting screws.
Ya got me thinking.........;-)

GFS is an American company with excellent products and service.
The mounting ring shouldn't be an issue. Are you going to adjust each one differently???

I've been on the semi-lookout for a Vintage Zip to add to my Vintage collection. Just a fun guitar. Their lipstick pups are available separately IIRC.

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Me too, but even taking into consideration the cheap build, I've heard really bad things about them, also really good things...
look cool though, and its the kind of guitar you won't be pissed off when you bash into amps or children.

Maybe I.m getting crossed wires here, but the GFS lipstick has four mounting/adjustment screws. whereas your usual humbucker has two.Barry wrote:GFS is an American company with excellent products and service.

Looks like you would need a mounting ring with 4 adjustment screw holes in.

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
I know I said Bareknuckle - only 'cause I'm ordering a couple - but boy; you could have some fun with this as a kind of test bed for pickups, eh!
Those doubled up lipstick things that Damian pointed up look interesting, and I wonder what a nice P90 would sound like in there....
I've often looked at my Clipper and wondered what I should install in the h/b slot....

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Use a normal type ring, put 4 new holes in it or just 2 at opposite corners. The slant effect.Sollophonic wrote:Maybe I.m getting crossed wires here, but the GFS lipstick has four mounting/adjustment screws. whereas your usual humbucker has two.Barry wrote:GFS is an American company with excellent products and service.

Ask them if they supply a ring??
I've had a good bit of gear from Hong Kong, no import charges. You will from the States.
Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
P90 would be my second choice too.

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
Least you could use the switches with one of these. Probably worth more than the guitar though...

Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
about a week ago I ordered a pair of those to put in a Thunder. the previous owner installed some generic humbuckers and they are outta there!
P-Rails and triple shot trim rings any day now.
the triple shot trim rings let you access the full spectrum of sounds available from each pickup (rail, P90, both, series connection, parallel connection)
the mini switch on the Thunder (originally for coil split function) will become phase reverse for the new pups.
after they arrive and get installed i can put up some pics and sound samples if you want to see/hear

Yes, please!
Re: What Pickup is in the Clipper 6
got the P-Rails with the triple shot rings (pre-wired at the factory)
couldn't be easier to install, 2-wire plus shield.
the mounting holes even lined up perfectly
one thing though, i had to change which guitar got the new pickups
i planned to put the set into a thunder 1,
but the trim rings were for an arched top guitar
i didn't want to send them back and wait for a different set with flat rings
so the new pickups got an immediate upgrade…
yes they do look AWESOME! like they were supposed to be there all the time!
this guitar had the original MMK75's but the previous owner had removed the PEQ pots and re-wired it for typical 2V/2T.
it seemed like a perfect candidate for something special to make up for that intrusion
the new pickups make it even more versatile than the original set-up.
after i get more familiar with the range of settings, i'll post up sound clips
for now i will just say they sound AMAZING!!!

I've not had the opportunity to experience these first hand but they do sound like you have the best of all worlds there Mike.
Meantime, CLICK HERE for a very good demo from Tone King, lots of technical info too. Looks like the guitar is a Gibby ES339(?)
