Re: Happy St. Paddy's Day!
Top o the mornin' to you, sir!
I've spent a lot of time in Eire. Very interesting on the languages... there are six "Celitc" languages, of which only three are Gaelic, Irish being one of them. I almost started learning Irish. Almost, lol.
Hardly any Irish speak "Irish" anymore, sadly. There's a movement to bring it back before it's lost.
I don't thing that "craic" is even Irish, is it? It's what they call fake Irish or mixed Irish nowadays.
Quick funny story about craic or "crack"... it's worth the read...
We took groups of teenagers to Ireland for years, mostly from churches. One day our rental bus driver asked the teenagers on the bus: "So are ya plannin' on havin' some great craic while in Ireland"? The teenagers looked mortified, just stared at him in unbelief. One kid dared to speak and said: "We're Christians, we don't have crack!" The driver says: "What? Christians in Ireland have craic all the time! Ireland has some of the best craic in the world!" The teens were horrified and didn't know what to do! Because to Americans "crack" is a cocaine type drug, but to the Irish "craic" is a word meaning "fun" Lol! We finally told the driver and the kids about the dual nature of the word craic. It was a priceless moment!!!
