Song stuck in my head....
... and it's a good one with possibly one of the best solos ever played!! Yeah; I know, big call, but it is a jaw droppingly good 'un and I've decided I should nut the song out.
The old fashioned way... with a piece of paper, a pencil and the recording!
Midnight at the Oasis by Maria Muldaur.
All I can tell you at the minute is that I think the verse in EM7 (Pos III), and that the intro chords are hellish - there's open strings ringing in there...

Re: Song stuck in my head....
Thanks John. Catchy tune. Opening almost like an intro of a Steely Dan song.
Somehow reminded me of a lot of guitar players and 'how they sounded' in the seventies, contributing in the studio to many artists and singers albums like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOUSwZSHo1I&t=27m45s BB. King a guitarist and employer(!). (Opening vaguely hints at a Eddie Harris influence as well) Look at that line up, 6 guitarists! Maybe the last track, an instrumental, 'Lucille's Granny' with the Joe Walsh solo, is a better example and that unisono solo with trumpet is a lovely feature too!
Anyway, talking about 'stuck in my head', this tune blew me away and it still does!
Lovely solo's by Larry Goldings, guitarist Jesse Van Ruller and the man Benjamin Herman on sax himself: Franks Day Out

Re: Song stuck in my head....
Ah, the 'ole ear worm!
I've suffered with them all my life. Even as a youngster. Couldn't get a damn tune out of my head...until I discovered the guitar and realized that I could use it to play it out. Kinda like musical exorcism.
For years I did exactly what you're now doing Johnny. These days it's too easy to look up stuff, but I do find that many times the online versions leave a lot to be desired.
Do you play the melody (note by note) then fill in around the notes? I find that works pretty well for me, but then my orientation is vocal first. Great tune with great guitar work.

Re: Song stuck in my head....
I try to find the key centre first, and then fiddle about with the chord structure, though sometimes I need the melody to work out the trickier chords!!
And then, of course, once I've nutted out what I the chords are on the fretboard, then I've got to name them!!

Re: Song stuck in my head....
Thanks John, that was refreshing actually.
Lots of slides and tweek-picking. Reminds me lot of 'Sultans of Swing' style.

Re: Song stuck in my head....
No time just now.
I'm sending my camel to bed, and he doesn't want to go.
Meantime listen to this live version but without the brilliant guitar work that's on the recorded version. Makes you realize what a huge influence it had on the song.
Sounds kinda average without it:
