So its time to take out the trash.....or more accurately the UBC and magnaflux IV's.

This might turn out crappy but here is what I got, Warman 12 guage ( here ) for the bridge, a DiMarzio HS-2 ( here ) stacked sc for middle and for now an unbranded rail HB 4wire for neck till I can afford something better.

I want to coil tap all 3 pups using the one push/pull if thats possible so all tapped coils when pushed and untapped when pulled.
just the standard 5 way selector switch.

Now I'm ok following the simplest, and I MEAN simplest of diagrams, but I have 3 different sets of colour codes to deal with here and I might lose the plot somewhere along the line.

I'm asking everyone for help here, but secretly hoping Mike will hit me in the face with a lovely simple laymans diagram. Smile

cheers

coil tapping with a push/pull is usually done with just 2 humbuckers because the switch is (typically) only a double pole switch.

you have the center point connection for each pickup on it's own pole on the switch and when it is engaged, then center taps for both pickups become connected to ground. when the switch is not engaged, there is no common connection between the 2 humbuckers at the center point.

there are mini switches available, to make 3 humbuckers coil split with one switch, but i have not seen one of those on a push/pull.

to figure out the pickup wiring, maybe you can hookup temporarily and see which is best at noise reduction. some alligator clips, a jack and a patch cord will do the trick

OK scrap the HS-2 in middle, because once upon a time it had its plastic base place replaced with a metal one, its just too big for the slot, so I'll put the magnaflux middle back in place for now........gutted as this is a great clean pickup Crying or Very sad

the SX has master volume and 2 tone controls, for neck and middle pups, with no tone control for bridge.
there are also 2 push pulls; one for coil split and one for phase reverse on middle pickup
here is a sketch i made of the stock wiring set up for the Spectrum SX

i can make adjustments to this diagram for your setup
there is an unused switch on the volume p/p. you can use that to do a coil split for the new neck pickup.
what do you want to do with the second p/p and the tone controls?

Ah, remember my sx is the 1 volume 1 tone p/p. Just the one p/p to play with.

I'll get back to this tomorrow as I must now appease the wife with a night on the tiles for her patience regarding my new influx of tasty westones, of which more news will be forthcoming next week Twisted Evil

thanks for the help Mike

So I spent the day rewiring this sucker, slaving over a hot iron. getting mainly frustrated and partly pissed off....a quick smoke sorted that issue.

I have the rail HB in the neck, the original magnaflux in middle and the warman 12 guage in bridge.
coil tap (i think) on both neck and bridge, I think I have something wrong somewhere because the bridge HB sounds like its outta phase when coil tapped. but I'm gonna leave it till next weekend as I just wont have the time till then.

Spectrum SX rewiring help Empty Change of plan, now back to HSS

Post by Sgt. Vimes Sat May 04, 2013 9:36 am

Ok so I decided (suprise suprise) that the cheapo hotrails wasn't up to much so back to HSS of Warman 12 Guage in bridge and 6 Guage in neck/middle.
now I'm confused a bit on north/south start/end malarky.
the bridge pup's wires are as follows:
Black is start / negative of coil 1
White is end / positive of coil 1
Red is start / negative of coil 2
Green is end / positive of coil 2
There is also a bare ground wire

am I right in thinking that north and south finish both go to the coil split switch?
and the north start (hot) to the 5way switch?
and the south start to ground, with the bare earth?

coil#1 start to the selector switch
coil#1 end + coil#2 start to coil split switch
coil#2 end to ground.

Briliant! you da man!!
I had it wired wrong, but had not yet restrung so a 2 minute job to put it your way and BINGO! perfect. thanks for the quick reply, I'm now a happy chappy.

after 20 minutes playing with these Warman pups, 1st impressions are excellent, the sc's are big, bright and stratty, the HB isnt so bright but has balls aplenty. I think I'm gonna be more inclined to pick this SX up now it sounds great.
