I've just noticed we are edging closer to the 1000th member, not bad for a forum that deals with one guitar make! [We've nearly hit---then we did--now we're not near] the magic 1000! 3262125054

When I signed up 3 years ago there was only around 300+ members, things have certainly snowballed over the last few years.

Does this make us a legitimate, grown up forum now. And will we have to start behaving ourselves? What a Face

You're right of course Chad!

Since John bestowed me with "Admin" status in order to tinker with the site, I have also been privy to the "New User Registration" notices. I can tell you that there is seldom a day goes by that one or more new users don't sign up.

That's a healthy testament to not only the increasing popularity and interest in Westone instruments but the healthy and positive discussion environment generated by the terrific folks in these Forums.

It was started by Silverfox (Neil) in 2008 when the forum that was in existence was shut down. He, Polly and I are 'sort of' the originals, if you like, and Polly's gone and Neil drops in from time to time which leaves me as the longest standing active member.

Bout, Colt, Warrn and caucajun are still active from 2008; Barry was a latecomer in about May 2009, from memory!!

1000 is a lot for a forum with such a specific subject-matter as this one. And though there are lots of come-and-go members, I think you have all, in particular the "oldies", done an incredible job in reviving and promoting these excellent instruments (and in provoking uncontrollable worldwide GAS). It's a wonderful wonderful forum!

Thanks for the history John! This is a great place, thanks for keeping her going. Glad I found it. It's the only forum I'm a regular at.

In light of this apparent trend of new members joining only to sell, I have just amended the "Rules" which are seen on registration.

In essence, if you're only joining to sell us something, don't bother, we're not interested. But if you love Westone, and want to share or learn, welcome!

Let's see if that helps cut 'em off at the pass.

perhaps there could be a 'temporary user' version of 'member' that would expire in 30 days, or some other short period.

something like that would allow for some marginally interested parties to pass on items they no longer want. somebody here might be wanting what they have to offer.
the temporary status would alert anyone interested to be cautious.
and then there is no need to maintain a 'member' who is never going to be active.

Unfortunately, not possible. You're either a member or a guest. We'd (Admin/Mod) have to physically remove the bugger to get rid.

I think we all need to take a breath here; yes, it's annoying and frustrating when people join just to flick an instrument on but the other side of that coin is we get first crack at it.

I mean, if someone is selling and no-one is interested in his wares, we just ignore the post, do we not?! Barry and I can go through and clear out non-active members in a heartbeat, so that's not a problem, either...

I reckon we're about due for a clean up as well... Smile

i don't know how to make a computer tell the difference

but anyway...

it doesn't bother me when somebody becomes a member just to try to flog off an unwanted, overpriced something, i find it amusing actually.
especially the bad pics!
and don't forget the sob stories of 'big bad wifey making me get rid of my toys' and other such nonsense. Roll on Floor Laff

this place is like a cafe where you can watch people come and go.
you can just listen or you can pick up along with any conversation.
it doesn't bother me to let anybody drop in, for any reason

i only just hope for more participation from more people

I fully agree. And haven't several westones actually been sold this way?

Maybe a compulsory first post in the "introduce yourself" thread might help to deter chancers and keep the serious sellers (not the "my wife blahblah.. so now I'm selling for way more than it's actually worth" type) and future long-term members?

Is there anyway to have a probation period where the for sale section is off limit to new comers for so many weeks or posts posted ??
I know i'm not a reg poster or anything but even i've noticed a lot of these sob story selllers poping on now because there wife made them do it....
It may reads like big brother controling everything but it might stop some of this ..
But then again it might not....

It's happens on every forum with people trying to make a fast coin on gear...
It's down to all of us really as we all have a love for Westones an other uncle mat guitars..
At the same time though how many of us have a guitar were looking out for????
We would if the price was right go for....
I know if a Raider 1 in the black to silver came up for sale I'd be very much out of pocket...
Then again if it was priced to high or being sold with keyword spam with no haggling option I'd just walk away..
It's only worth what you can or what you want to pay...
Not what the last one went for on evilbay...

Maybe the 1000 member should buy us all the Westone guitar of our choosing... Razz

Or we clump in an give them a guitar pick......

I was a member of a Westone Forum back in like 2005 or 2006, then drifted away, sold my Westones, dropped out...

Then a cheap Aria Pro II made me think about Westones again, and a cheap Corsair dragged me back in.

I'm enjoying my Westones much more the 2nd time around.

Well, I gotta be clear: I haven't been without a Westone since late 2010, almost 2 years now. I've been active off and on on this board since then.

But my original participation and later absence was from 2007 to 2010 or so. And I remember meeting Penny, but I'm not 100% certain it was *this* board. Wasn't "Raven" the original site provider? When he decided to shut down the site, I was one of the people who volunteered to take all the files, but he already had people willing, and I think this site is the result of one of those generous people.

Polly, perhaps? She's now doing things with horses, and Dreamraven still sticks his head around the corner every now and then, just to see what's going on; otherwise pretty much the same crew!
