Pantera - Westone Pantera X 775 Bass Empty Westone Pantera X 775 Bass

Post by german fool Mon May 21, 2012 2:53 am

sorry for my english:
I have 3 Westone Basses: 2 Westone Spectrum LX-Z (both with the 2 necks) and one Pantera:
it is a Westone Pantera X 775 Bass (5 string Version form 1986).
I asked me, why the A string has a little bit lower punch than the others.
Inside the cap i found this: both PUs has only 4 pole pieces in 2 lines. the "A" string is between two of the poles, the other strings are nearer to or abouve the poles.

Is it right, that the pickups inside are the same PUs as for the 4 string version?

Can anyone understand, what my problem is?

greetings from germany

Wow.. that's odd!! I'm sorry; I know very little about the 5 string basses, hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon! We'd very much like to see what you've got, though...

Wasn't there already a similar thread?? Some bass player not understanding why one string wasn't as loud as the others? Sounds familiar anyway.

But I cannot help, I am very sorry..

Herzlich willkommen und bitte entschuldigen Sie meine Deutsch, GF.

I also have an x775. If you would send your pictures to me I can investigate it for you. You will see an envelope icon under my avatar to click which will link you to my email. I'll also post the pictures here for others to see.

An x775 is fairly rare as only one other actively posting member (Sarcaster) has one that I can think of at the moment. Another less frequent member Silence86 (?) who also is in Germany also has one if my memory is not failing me.

Next time I change the strings on mine I will take a look - I haven't had it that long so I have never looked.
I didn;t notice a drop in sound on the A when I played it, but now that I know to listen for it I will try again and see if I hear the same thing

Dug out some pics of my x775 that were taken when I was tearing it down last year. Do these look familiar, GF?

Can we assume yours is set up with low B on top?

NOW with pictures, ha haaa!

Yes, my PUs are the same. Inside the cap it will look like this to the strings:
Pantera - Westone Pantera X 775 Bass T2_5WJOUul9kbu
I think, thats very strange: to take a 4 string PU into a 5 string bass.
Ok, nevermind.

Here my westones:
This one is the Spectrum LX-Z of my son:

Pantera - Westone Pantera X 775 Bass T2_hNT5r4uPI5j

My second spectrum wasn´t in that good condition:
The neck PU doesn´t work and has to rewired, the electronic was damaged, so I put the 2 Pantera PUs in the bass and an Ibanez Vari mid III EQ in it. The 2 switches are out of function. It sounds great with the fretless neck.
Pantera - Westone Pantera X 775 Bass T2_u5PY81Rq2Px
The pantera EQ was not my favorite. So i put a EMG BTC 2 band EQ and 2 Kent Amstrong soapbars inside for a while. (Because of the problem with the lower output of the A string)
Pantera - Westone Pantera X 775 Bass T2_mo1SguA_Lf2
The picture is taken before using the EMG BTC.
It is not the best solution. My new idea is to put 2 EMG HZ35 inside the original caps. The spectrum gets his original caps with the pantera PUs inside.

Now the two after pimping(is it correct?).
