Re: Westone Thunder III
This is a little off topic, but.....
The Thunder III in Sweden looks like it has a rosewood fingerboard. Some later catalogs state ebony - others rosewood.
I have an '87 Rainbow II that looks like it has a rosewood fingerboard. The earlier catalogs state ebony.
Might this be Macassar ebony?
It surely does not look like Gabon (regular) ebony.
Thoughts???

Re: Westone Thunder III
Bloody hell, Colt - how do we tell which ebony is which?! Is one a lighter shade than the other?

Macassar usually has light brown stripes against a dark brown background Like This...
When you think of ebony, you're probably thinking of Gabon which looks Like This...
Both of them are smoother (less noticeable grain texture) than rosewood.
Check out Ed Roman's awesome Macassar stash Here...

Re: Westone Thunder III
"ebony" is the result of a disease of the heart of certain trees (diospyros). The wood color is not naturally black : the disease gives it this color. So the coloration of the wood can be partial depending on the illness of the tree, and geographical origin.
Macassar diospyros are less affected by the disease than Gabon ones
A sane Diospyros would be totally brown, and less hard, than a ill one.
I've been living in Africa for 8 years, the men who collect ebony told me this, and it's not widely known...

Re: Westone Thunder III
something must have changed in the past months since i have got to know westone...if that development proceeds, westone guitars will me more expensive than ricknbackers in about half a year...
Re: Westone Thunder III
The Thunder III is a high end guitar. 810$ is not expensive for this kind of guitar.
How much would you pay for a new PRS, or ESP ?

Re: Westone Thunder III
Yeah, I know, but it still grates just a little because not more than 12 months ago you could pick up a Westone or Vantage or Electra for next to nothing! My feel is that there are a lot of muppets out there selling, and buying, these guitars because they have suddenly become 'fashionable", which, of course, we in here have to take a little responsibility for as we sing their praises very highly indeed, and someone, somewhere has taken notice!
And one thing is for sure; they will not get any cheaper...

Re: Westone Thunder III
I have never played a PRS, but the ESPs I have played didn't seem any nicer than the cheap models in the shop...
