Pickups - Active pickups draining battery in 30 minutes Empty Active pickups draining battery in 30 minutes

Post by Essbee Sat Apr 15, 2023 12:07 pm

My friend has a spectrum bass, I’ve not seen it yet, but from a new battery to plugged in, he’s getting 30m before the battery dies.

Any ideas?

Thank you for any help

that sounds like a short circuit. (does the battery feel warm?)

i would suggest checking the wiring compartment to make sure there are no crossed wires, connections touching that should not be, or contacts grounding out that should not be.

if you have a pc board, be sure the bottom side of the board is not making contact with anything else in the wiring cavity. you can just cover it with some plastic electrical tape. also check the top side to be sure none of the components are bent and making contact in the wrong place.

(on guitars and basses with active circuits, always remember to unplug the lead when not using. that will disconnect the battery when not in use.)

Pickups - Active pickups draining battery in 30 minutes Img_1310Can anyone identify the switches? The volume is push/pull. Sounds a bit like a phase switch. Thanks

Looks like you have a Spectrum LX model there.

This originally came with two necks, fretted and un-fretted. Do you have them both?

This model like, all similar Westones, has an active tone circuit, not active pickups. The volume push-pull is a coil cut and the mini switches control phase reversal and active on-off.

See the LX chart in the brochure scan for more details here:

That’s amazing!!! Thank you!
It’s my friends, the fretless neck and original case are there.
Do you have any idea why one of the 2 batteries is draining at a much faster rate than the other? I can’t see any shorts visible. Thanks again

You didn't mention that it was only one battery only that drained.

Is it the battery on the same connector that's failing every time?

That would seem to indicate a short circuit, as gittarasaurus indicated in his post above. Check the battery connector for corrosion too. If there's rust either remove it or replace the connector.

I can't think of any other reason for it to drain unless someone was attempting to make changes to the circuit and made an error somewhere, like a blob of solder that doesn't belong where it is, or a stray piece of wiring for example.
