It's an '89 Dana III ltd.  Neck plate says '89, though they were in the 1990 catalog.  Very rare birds.  Some kid had it, sprayed it thick with a textured silver paint, stuck an Ibanez INF4 humbuggy in the bridge, ripped out and discarded the DSR5 Enhancer , disconnected the middle pup, installed a three way switch, somehow kept the original 25K pots in the guitar, soldered it so badly that I didn't even need a soldering iron to disconnect most of it, and commenced to beat the poo out of it. 

Ever wonder how passive pickups sound with 25K pots?        Very dark, very dead, very bad. 

Anyhow, I want this silver paint off.  Suggestions?

If the original paint is similar to Uncle Mats', usual the rattle can stuff on top should "melt" off with some paint stripper, lightly applied and liberally wiped. Timing might be critical. If left on too long it could attack the original coat.

I removed a similar rattle can paint job from an Aria Pro Urchin with stripper. Unfortunately the previous owner had really buggered up the original black paint so much that it was only good as an undercoat in the end.

With luck you can get it to the point where you can buff up the remainder with the usual wet sanding, etc.

I would go with acetone first,  less intrusive than a full blooded sstripper (oo-er)

Adding to St Vimes and Barry, I used an All Purpose/Universal thinner and an Acrylic thinner to remove an amateur paint job over my Pantera X300 and neither troubled the original paint at all. I received confirmation that the paint used on the Westone Dana's was the same as that used on Pantera models, so it should be ok. I would be patient when using the thinner but I would try a little first to test whether this paint job can be removed by this type of thinner before you buy a whole lot. It takes a lot of thinner and time, and be sure to follow safety procedures.

After seeing the original red underneath, I will decide whether to keep it red or to make it hot pink tiger striped.
