Hi to all and sundry,
Just been checking a couple of my spectrum sts 84/5. Please correct me if I am wrong, I am lead to believe that both pups are magnaflux 1.
With the rearside cover off thru the jack, they check out at around 6.35 on both pups, when coil tap switch is applied with either pup the resistance drops to 3.22, and when the toggle switch is in the middle and the coil tapswitch is applied the resistance drops to 1.58. When I was kinda expecting the resistance to double up back to 6.35 ish. Can anyone confirm that these reading are correct please.
.

Regards,

Ged

it sounds like you have the UBC pickups.

a typical humbucker is 2 coils in series (3.22 + 3.22 = 6.44)
when both pickups are engaged by the selector switch they are connected in parallel so resistance will be approximately (neck + bridge, divided by 2)

electronic theory teaches us that:
when adding resistance in series, total resistance increases
when adding resistance in parallel the total resistance decreases

Yup, you have the less than stellar and infamous UBC pickups. You can read about them HERE

These tend to strike most as "thin" sounding and many of us have swapped them out for something closer to the MMK45's (typically in the 11KΩ range). Have a search for UBC and you'll see many posts on the subject.
