Lacquer on Westone Empty Lacquer on Westone

Post by agat38 Fri Jun 13, 2008 2:16 am

Hello from France,
I
was the owner of a Thunder III in 1992 to 99, now I have a beautiful Rainbow II brown sunburst all original except nut ,
I wanted to know what kind of lacquer was used on guitar Westone.

Thanks

Phil

Probably a nitrocellulose lacquer, I'm guessing; some one in here will now for sure!!

...and welcome!! Laughing

Hello Phil and Welcome! Very Happy

Yes, I think that John is right and I'm almost certain that the same question came up once before somewhere. I'm not sure if it was in these forums or in the old forums but I have a feeling that it has been mentioned in here somewhere.

If you have the time to browse through every post you might be lucky enough to come across it, or failing that, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than myself will provide you with the right information.

I hope that this helps!

Most of the Westones have a really thick poly finish on them, especially the solid-colored ones.

I'm not certain about your Thunder III or Rainbow II, however I do have a Rainbow II and it doesn't seem to have an overly thick finish on it compared to a solid-colored Pantera or Thunder II.

Hi,

Westone guitars are all finished using very reliable polyurethane (PU) lacker exclusively (as well as MIJ Yamaha, old Ibanez ...) That's why the finish is rock-hard and last for decades (for information, even the post 1995 PRS use cheap polyester resin, which is thicker than PU, and not great for tone).

Only Gibson and a few other manufacturers still use Nitro-celluloid, which is more fragile than PU and will rub off over the years (but a little bit better for tone).

Ive just registered to this forum because I own 2 Westones, and am willing to begin collecting them.

I will present myself soon Smile

Cheers

I bet it's polyurethane or polyester.

Hello again Jean-Phillippe, Smile

Thank you for that. How about putting some close up photos of just your Westones up in the Members Westones forum as well?
