Westone Villain Neck Pocket?

westone - Westone Villain Neck Pocket? Empty Westone Villain Neck Pocket?

Post by Sunstealer73 Fri May 15, 2020 11:22 am

I have a Westone Villain Maple that I bought new in 1990.  I've been working on getting it playable again and have swapped the pickup and all the electronics.  The problem I'm having is that the neck angle is off and the action gets really high as you go up the neck.  It has the Kahler Spyder tremolo and I have it as low as it will go.  It looks like it is going to need a shim to change the neck angle.  Does anyone know if the neck pocket on these is the same as a Fender?  I was going to order the premade shims from Stew Mac and I'm sure they are made to fit a Fender pocket.

Hi and welcome.
First, I assume you have adjusted the truss rod for straightness (ie, too much relief)?
Then, I would not expect any pre-made shim to be a perfect drop in fit, on any guitar.

Be prepared to re-shape or reduce whatever you have. You may find that the shims you bought need to be sanded down which becomes a waste of money.

Have you already determined the thickness required? Unless the neck angle is severely out of whack (hard to believe) you'd be surprised at just how little it takes to adjust the angle.

You are typically working in thousandths of an inch. In some cases even the addition of a strip of aluminum or copper tape can have a substantial effect.

And making your own wood shim from veneer stock is simple and is easy to work with. And cheaper!

Thanks!

I've adjusted the truss rod already and am good on that front.

I do have a woodworking shop, I might just go ahead and try making my own.  When I pulled the next last week, I found the remnants of a plastic credit card that I must have used years ago to try and do the same thing.  I took it out and bolted the next back up and it was definitely helping some, but not enough.

A credit card? Yikes, that's a substantial thickness!

I'm a little confused though. You removed it and the neck angle improved?

That would mean it was originally in the wrong place, towards the head stock end of the pocket.

To move the neck back the shim needs to be at the body end of the pocket and a credit card I'm guessing would be much too thick.

No, it got worse when I removed it, so I think I was on the right track whenever I did that years ago.  It was more like a value card or something, pretty thin plastic.

Thanks.

OK, glad we cleared that up!

I'm really wondering though why the neck angle appears to be so far out in the first place. Nothing's perfect but MIK builds are usually very good quality.

Was it always this way or has something happened to the guitar recently? Drastic humidity/temperature change? An impact?
