Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Masterful technique... with a bit of feeling!! Nice link!! Somewhere I've got a TV doco that TVNZ did on Wilkinson which is just primo - he comes across as a bit of a wally but his guitar playing simply had me agog!! And then a few years later I ran into the guy during a festival where he was playing and spoke to him between sets and found him a very humble and unassuming chap... who could still kill you with a guitar!!
I was listening to Graham Bonnet's take on Dylan's "It's all over now Baby Blue" and was wondering - not for the first time! - who the hell is playing those guitars; magic piece of music given some bite by Bonnets delivery and by the guitar lines....
My favourite Aussie song would be this...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrDSh7WWdZs
...because I was there when the Star came down and the resulting riots!! But that guitar playing sends a shiver up my spine... Ian Moss is his name.

I looked at a bunch of Cold Chisel stuff... wow, its way up there. (How did I never stumble across this band?) I like this one (Houndog):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxpLQyC-yIY&feature=related
and Ian Moss can sing too, at least in this version of "Bow River" - I like his phrasing in the solos from this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdVRNDnTKTU&feature=related
Thanks John, you put me onto a new old band. The lead singer (Barnes, Barnsey?) can howl and growl.

My son (now 12 yrs), likes Wolfmother, another Aussie band. "Joker and the thief" has some bone shaking riffs (you'll need to get through the frat-boy style capers, but the tune is solid):

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Jimmy Barnes is his name and I rate him highly with the Chisel, not so much now... Don Walker is the keys man and I could listen to him all day!!
Ian had a hit on his own with Tuckers daughter; quite nice, ie not vomit inducing!!
The theme from Nicholas Cages' "Ghost rider" - Ghost riders in the sky - is re-done by the Aussie band Spiderbait - I;'ve always liked the song and that is a stonking treatment....
Now if the Chisel lit yer fire, find anything by The Angels; another band who were doing the rounds of the pubs when I was in Aussie but made it big later on - Doc Neeson has to be one of the best front men ever!!

Yeah; that's Doc! Looks a little the worse for wear these days as he suffered severe injuries in a car smash. Gee, he was good live in the early 80's...

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Grogg and John,
YES - The Angels were amazing. "Take a long line" was a big hit here on the prairies ~ 1979... The second video you posted brought back so many memories. A couple of friends and I took a road trip in my car ('63 Dodge 440, with a poly(hemi) 318 V8) through Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta... that song was rated our number 1 driving tune. Ah, to be 17 years old and between school and work.
THANKS for reminding me of this! Fantastic stuff; Doc Neeson was the $%@t.
Here's a definitely more 80's iteration of the first:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7kYVjL2lps&feature=related
Here's another goodie, "After the rain":

Ah, to be Canadian then and be able to go and see Rush, The Guess Who and BTO...that would have been cool! Yes, the Angels, Cold Chisel, Hoodoo Gurus, Screaming Jets and The Church were great bands and I was lucky enough to see 'em all live but to see Rush, well... and to see the Guess Who!! I'd pretty much sell my first born for THAT!!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
As promised, here's a good song, with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. These two made some solid music on two collaborative albums released a bunch of years ago (the quality is poor, unfortunately):
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNjgyNjc3MTI=.html
One of my favourites, mentioned here but not showcased much is Rory Gallagher. And here's a selection of stuff - first up is Bullfrog blues:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33Jaodra7AY&feature=player_embedded#
"too much alcohol":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1zsRRt1FWE
"going to my hometown"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYYbK2sDaJ4
"Tatooed Lady", good stuff:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdkuHgSzNhg&feature=player_embedded#
"Shadow Play":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsUKWFkmRu0&feature=related
Do enjoy the stuff with him playing that absolutely pummelled strat. There's not a lot of finish left on that guitar.

I was lucky enough to see Rory in NZ in about 78 or 79 and that gig rates really highly amongst gigs I've been to; he was great and I met him after the show; a very humble, approachable man, sadly missed....
Shadow Play is my fave, along with Shinkicker.

Oddly, I never really rated Iommi - I'm not a big fan of the massive sort of de-tuning he does but once I knew why he did it, I had another listen to the Sabbs and while I'm not their greatest fan, I now have a few on iTunes!! You've gotta be in the right mood for the Sabbs, eh!!!

I saw them in Christchurch NZ in 2007 when Jon Herington was indeed on guitar, and yes, he certainly managed to get the myriad different sounds that Fagan and Becker coaxed out of their myriad of guitarists over the years, eh! The Dan's main claim to fame was finding the right player for the song, and on most of their albums you'll find many guitarists sharing the limelight, but they used, amongst others, off the top of my head, Jeff Baxter, Larry Carlton, Denny Dias, Rick Derringer, Steve Khan and of course, Walter is no slouch either!!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
I was fortunate enough to see Steely Dan twice in Toronto. The first I think was in '94, the second about '04. Took my wife and son to the last one...he was born in the interim and he seemed to dig the groove masters even at age 10. 'Course now at 14 he wouldn't even admit to liking them!
Becker was great but gotta say that Fagin is getting really scary looking on the TV closeups!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Back to Iommi - the Paris concert from 1970 is sublime - I have enjoyed his stuff since I was about 12 or so... Paranoid was my second album (first was the triple disc Yes that my Dad bought for me) - about 5 bucks CDN at the Bay store, downtown Wpg.
I always fought to try to emulate Iommi's tone, achieved with his p90's and that SG of his. Never really totally successful at that. I was also impressed by Black Sabbath's drummer of that era. Their later stuff eg, post Ozzy, also had its moments including gems such as "Children of the Sea", etc.
Ozzy's lyrics rarely went deeper than the surface of the garage floor, but anyway, here are some other examples stuff on the web:
The one and only, the ubiquitous and much misunderstood "Iron Man":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MII3ns2KTBc&feature=related
"Fairies wear boots" (most amazing, most underrated Sabbath tune/tunes - 2 tunes for the price of one):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvuI8d57N9I
"N.I.B." has some good footage of Iommi's handiwork:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiShfBmb-oA&feature=related
"War pigs" - this tune is unique insofar as it has been covered from everyone from Bugs Bunny to Duran Duran to Dead Kennedys. Well Ok, not that broadly, but many, many covers of this tune exist, including some operatic iterations:

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Personally, my own ultimate inspiration is Ritchie Blackmore (one look at my strat would leave no doubt!). Everything from the early Purple days through Rainbow ('Light in the Black', full volume, close your eyes, and if you are still unmoved there is no hope for you!) and later Purple and Rainbow reformations finally into Blackmores Night. I love the variety in his playing, and the individuality. He doesn't sound like anyone else and no one (even Yngwie!) sounds like him.
Also a huge David Gilmour fan, Steve Hackett, Tony Iommi, Hendrix (of course), Leslie West, Clapton, Peter Green, Lindsay Buckingham, Nick Barrett (Pendragon, check out the new album, Pure. Stunning!), the whole string section from Iron Maiden (Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers) and Jack Bruce (I play bass a lot too). Of the younger crop, Matt Bellamy of Muse stands out from the crowd, and he is so talented I hate him!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
I listened to Tony Iommi being interviewed on Radio 2 (UK) a couple of nights back, "Iron Man" was one of the featured tracks. The chat was one of the funniest things I've ever heard, seems that the band were totally blown away with the whole devil cult thing and found it hard to live up to the hype. Just a bunch of Brummie lads suddenly found themselves jetting round the States trying to live the dream and be really "paranoid" without much idea other than getting senseless drunk.
Iommi's legendary technical ideas were a result of an accident when he lost the tips of the fingers on his right (fretting) hand in the sheet metal plant where he was working days before Sabbath went pro. With no job he began experimenting with thin strings, down-tuning and plastic finger-tips cut from a plastic washing-up liquid bottle glued onto what was left of his fingers!
The rest is history as the say..

I would post some links, but as there's so much to choose from, I wouldn't know where to start! I can only recommend one and all to go to youtube and enter Ritchie Blackmore in the search box, then spend several hours going through all of it! Recommended tunes would be Light in the Black, Difficult to Cure, Stargazer, Chid in Time, Highway Star, Burn, Long Live Rock and Roll, All for One, Fires at Midnight, the list is endless! Happy hunting!

This thread had gone quiet but after seeing Joe Bonamassa play the UEA in Norwich (UK) two nights back, I had to add him to the list. Awsome... and that doesn't begin to do justice.
Couple of hours of absolute guitar heaven. UK members... if you can beg, steal or borrow the £s to catch JB on tour here, you won't regret it. From the feedback on the 'net, next time he plays Europe, it will be stadium gigs only. Go now, shove your way to as near to the stage as you can get, pin yer lugs back

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
My guitar hero? hmmm I'd have to say Allan Holdsworth is the all time master ( Andre Segovia Heard Allan before he died and said,"Allan is the best I have ever heard" )
but trying to emulate him is ridiculous and as I have mentioned before using his sound would be so obvious it wouldn't be funny though kinda cool if you can pull it off. There's so many I can never really pin one single guy down as my favourite, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Lee Ritenour, Frank Gambale, Pat Metheny, Uli Jon Roth, Frank Marino,Johnny Winter (Akron Tangiers April 10), I could go on and on. As for a guitar hero I have that I can actually have fun with is Robin Trower, I saw him in 1977 and I have been a fan ever since. I used to play alot of RUSH especially moving pictures & hemispheres.

OH ya... hey I got a video of Tony playing guitar with Jethro Tull.. you can clearly see his fingers (chopped off) and the plastic appendages he used.. he used 'em like slide guitar, very cool.

Excellent I too have seen Steely Dan twice around the same times too and I always thought the early pics of Fagen (like on Midnight Special) was the scariest

Took my wife and son to the last one...he was born in the interim and he seemed to dig the groove masters even at age 10. 'Course now at 14 he wouldn't even admit to liking them!
Becker was great but gotta say that Fagin is getting really scary looking on the TV closeups!

Indeed I forgot about Rory.. I have every one of his recordings... from Taste to tons of bootlegs with great sound if anyone ever needs.... I have quite the collection of players complete audio libraries, every album has an mp3 twin too.

One of my favourites, mentioned here but not showcased much is Rory Gallagher. And here's a selection of stuff - first up is Bullfrog blues:

"too much alcohol":

"going to my hometown"

"Tatooed Lady", good stuff:

"Shadow Play":

Do enjoy the stuff with him playing that absolutely pummelled strat. There's not a lot of finish left on that guitar.

Walter wasn't my fav from Steely.. they had others doing much more memorable solos... Denny Dias, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Dan Parks!, Elliot Randall, Skunk Baxter, heck even Chuck Berry was on AJA!

Now, ain't it funny how, whilst at first glance, all of our tastes are quite different, there's probably more in common than you'd first think!!
God; Holdsworth - just incomparable!! I cannot begin to work out some - actually most!! - of the intervals he uses!! I'm old school and try to work things out from the record/CD/mp3 and I just can't do it; he's certainly one of a kind. Bloody hard to dance to, tho!!
My personal guru is a NZ guy called James Wilkinson who does things with an acoustic guitar that should be illegal; he's a helluva nice bloke to boot!!

Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
Hehe cool I do the same when working out songs, i knew someone who could play a few of his tunes.. remarkable player, to play Allan's style takes an incomparable understanding of the fretboard, If you've ever seen one of his dvd's for techniques he will always elude to his seeing patterns and his chords. I've seen Allan 12 times... I had dinner with him once before a show and have talked and had drinks with him 10 of the 12 shows... super nice guy... very 'umble.... dig this picture of me and Allan at the Thirsty Ear in Columbus last year.
he loved my shirt.... from one of his earlier concerts. he's even recognises me at shows now!

Nice picture. Is that before or after drinks? Check out the Guy in the back. What's up with him? He probably wishes Allan would take a picture with him.
Re: Enthusiasm for Hendrix' technical ability - Those under (edit: 80)...who's your guitar hero?
That's after the show.. lol ya that guy in the pic really bugs me..... damnit get yer own pic!!!... afterwards Allan was breaking down his equipment and I said to him,"what? no roadies?" and he practically threw his Hughes & Kettner Switchblade at me... lol he had a good laff at that, telling me I could hike it out to his truck out back. He tried showing me how his pedals were setup. He used to use a Yamaha UD-Stomp and I didn't see one on stage turns out he uses a series of pedals hooked up to a Mac laptop (it's a program written for MAC apparently) that has all his settings and is the main hub for his 6 (small stomp boxes) pedals that were sittin on a table next to him and he'd reach over and just hit em with his hand...he really didn't go any further on how it works and other people wanted some time with him.

Oh lord don't make me point out all the fallacies of MAC or apple.... Allan said the program was made on a MAC for him specifically as a convenience for him, it wasn't his choice, there was a series of 6 stomp boxes with names written on them like delay1,delay2,chorus, flanger, etc...the pedals were just switches is all they wern't effects pedals at all.

Hee hee... many have tried; including 2 nephews who are very good programmers !! I like 'em because they're computers for Luddites! We're using a netbook with W7 while we're travelling and I'm having god's own trouble making the thing do what I want....

norfolkngood wrote:Gary Moore. Followed his career from Skid Row through Thin Lizzy and then his solo years, saw him a few years back at Birmingham NEC when he was support for BB King's last UK dates. He still seems to want to move on musically, his work has alternated between blues & rock and back again, I've got all the albums and DVDs and will probably be buried with them!
No doubt!
He bought Peter Greene's Les Paul.
In the '60s in England, everyone (including Page, Clapton, and Beck) wanted to play and sound like Peter Greene.
Gary Moore is there!
If you have never heard Peter Greene, then you need to!
There's a sound in my head and Peter Greene is it.
