pickup - pickup magnets types ... Empty pickup magnets types ...

so, i bought a set of 5 hot rail pickups (the straight-sided single pickup humbucker type) for one of my projects.  they cost £6.88 each for the 'superior' AlNiCo version (though the ferrite version was the same price).

now, i've seen ferrite versions for about £10 a pair and ceramic versions for about £20 each (4 times as much - that's quite a spread).  i'm beginning to wonder just what the difference really is?

5 x £10 / 2 = £25

5 x £20 / 1 = £100

£100 - £25 = £75

£75 is what i paid for the ltd ec-50!

i went for the AlNiCo because they seem to be more powerful. i'm not sure that's true, however, that was my uninformed guess. so, it's cost me £34.40. the guitar these are going on was US$40, excluding shipping. i can live with possibly having wasted £9.40, though i'd rather think that i've got something a little better for that money!

Google is your friend here Monkey, lots of info out there depending on what you want to focus on.

The type of magnet is not usually the determining factor in "power" output of a pickup. It's more about the change in tone. Many of Matsumoku's most popular pups (MMK) are actually ceramic based.

Have a look at these posts for more info:

well, i had a look, or should i say listen, to this ...

... and, honestly, i can't tell the difference between the clean AlNiCo V and the clean ceramic.  maybe that's my perforated ear drums.

I don't know why anyone would try to compare pickups using a distortion setting. Just dumb IMHO.

On clean settings the differences can be heard better, but they can be subtle. At best you can only get an approximation of the actual sound over your computer. You have to hear them live if you're going to get really "picky" or need a specific sound.

Otherwise let your pocketbook dictate. You can't go far wrong with just about any name brand pups these days.

i may put the 'expensive' ceramic ones into my teisco audition with the non-standard trapeze. £40 for a set of pickups is affordable. £100 much less so.
