OK, gang - this is a happening thing. Some filthy lucre has changed hands and a Trans-blue Spectrum SX in slightly less than stellar nick should be on its way to Australia as soon as Mike's schedule permits.... happy days and fun times ahead!

That's what makes it unique, but I do find that it's a bit like playing on glass. And if you sweat a lot while playing it does leave finger marks which is kind of ugly. But cleanup is easy enough.

I don't know how much is psychological though. You tend to expect open an grained wood fret board and if you let that get into your head it can be a distraction.

One other comment, if the fret board is hit it leaves a nasty "shattered" mark which is nearly impossible to repair. Mine has such a mark and even though small, it is a distraction.

edit:
Found this old pic to illustrate. Not the best quality but I think you can see the issue:

Just as an aside, does anyone know of a factory made attempt at a coloured fretboard where the wood (maple?) is stained rather than sealed? Is it even doable? scratch

Here's a new process being used on guitar maple fingerboards.

Interesting - does a 'rosewood' or 'ebony' looking maple board still sound like a maple, though, or does the thermal treatment have an effect on that as well?

It might just be me, but I've never got on with maple fingerboards...

Didn't even realise it was maple until I heard about it.

The guitar is all mahogany, body, neck, with a maple cap so sounded 'normal' rosewood to me. Not a fan of maple boards neither even though I've a few.

Here's a few shots without ever having any oil on it.

And the guitar itself, class for £150, Wilkinson p'ups+hardwear, sounds fine.

When I was a the shop I remember Gibson had introduced this process on several models as an alternative to rosewood which was becoming harder to source. I don't know if they're still doing it.

If I hadn't been told I wouldn't have known. Looked and played like a rosewood fret board to moi.

I had that opinion too.
For years I never cared much for Maple either but I think that was more a preference than anything else. From working at the shop and having collected a few of my own I now have come to appreciate them better.

Does the fingerboard wood really make a quantifiable difference to a player? I have no opinion on the whole maple/rosewood argument as I just play 'em and don't get hung up on what woods are used in construction, eh!

Neck radius and scale length make all the difference in the world, but board timber??

When I bought & sold a few guitars a bit back, I was lucky enough to have four Musicman Silhouette guitars in at once - three had rosewood boards & one maple; all stock pickups. One rosewood & the maple had identical humbucker layouts, but the maple always sounded more 'brittle' & sharp compared to the other. It might well have just been my ears, but I REALLY wanted to keep the maple & was so disappointed when it sounded crap (to me). Even the other two with single coils sounded 'warmer' to me than the maple one. Probably just my subconscious or something, but I've not played a maple board since Smile
