WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
First time on here, but I've owned a Westone Thunder 1 since 11/11/1987 as my first guitar and have a number of others now, including a rather lovely Rainbow 1 I got for a very good price a few years back.
However, I am looking for a bridge saddle for the early style (not the heavy brass) bridge for a Paduak 1.
I don't believe this bridge is easily interchangeable with the heavy bridge, but can anyone tell me if such a thing exists in someone's parts bin, or whether there is a suitable alternative I can swap out or even use one as a workaround?
I have searched, but not found any references on this site.
Many thanks.

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
Show us what you're after with dimensions included; I'm quite sure there are a few saddles about...
I know I've got 3 or 4 brass bridges in a box, and quite a few different sizes of those saddles hanging about...
... if they're standard metric ones you should be OK... 10.5mm centres etc. etc....

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
One of the few Mats barrel saddle bridge designs that works...sort of...kind of...OK, they're bloody awful.
Need a second opinion? They're fugly too!
Hate the damn things. Just replace it with one that looks good and actually works the way it should.

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
Having looked at the pic again more closely, they look awfully like Tele saddles, don't they? I suppose they possibly are, much like the heavier bridge is Strat in style.
Thanks for your help, gents. Now, off to look at the knobs stickies...

I've seen some Tele bridges that have similar arrangement. You may find that you can interchange parts if string spacing works. Its not one of the best designs though I have to say

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
Tele saddles would be fine. Wilkinson make a nice compensated set. But it's the mounting/intonation screw that won't work on that bridge.

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
Is that because it is longer and thinner than the new ones? Would the Wilko bridge plate fit without redrilling, though? I would rather work with the small bits than drill holes in the body.Barry wrote:Tele saddles would be fine. Wilkinson make a nice compensated set. Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
That's part of it, and the original screws are overly long and tend to "wander".
But the main reason is that the Tele intonation screws would have to be mounted in between the existing holes on the bridge plate requiring holes be drilled. You wouldn't want to do that without first plugging the old ones, it would weaken the metal.
That's just too much work IMHO. Just replace the whole thing with a properly designed bridge complete with your choice of saddles. There are lots of options out there, including the Wilkinson half size Tele style with compensated brass saddles. I've used it with success on a Danelectro, and they're very good.

Nope. Not at all.
And the salient point? It's still fugly!
Try this: Wilkinson half size bridge

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
It's not a three saddle bridge, it's a six saddle.....
Count them.....
Count them.....
Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
Huh? No, replace the whole thing.
2 strings per saddle x 3 = 6.
Is string spacing a problem?

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
à chacun son goût. Just a suggestion Damian. I did say there were lots of options available out there. Why the hell put a Tele bridge on a Paduak??? now thats 'king crazy and 'king ugly
As for my old bridges, damned if I can remember where I put 'em, if indeed I still have 'em.
I do remember sending one to a former member here who wanted to restore his guitar to "stock". I counseled against it but he did it any way. Then he promptly took it off and put on a real bridge.
Whops! apologies Damian...I accidentally over wrote your original post. Hit the Edit button in error.

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
I'd have thought you could buy the six saddle bridge and do a transplannt of all the saddles.
You might need to source some longer screws though if you have lost any or the screw treads are different, as they are verrrrry lonnnng on the Paduak.
That seems to be quite do-able without major works and more holes on the guitar body....

Re: WANTED – Paduak 1 early bridge saddle
Actually the bridge type in Adeys photo works fine, NO PROBLEMS!!
It's the one that hooks up at the back of the baseplate thats a bummer.
Also as most Westones can do with shim at the neck and therefor you'll need to raise the saddles creating a sharper break angle over the 'barrels'. ie more downforce. Also gets the grubscrews out of your palm.
I've a few guitars with that bridge(hooks in the baseplate) Don't know what your crying about...
